TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a two game series and the fourth of eight meetings here. The eighth of 16 meetings. The Braves are 2-5 vs. the Tides, 1-2 at home. This is the sixth of 13 straight home games for the Braves (0-5). Richmond was 5-0 vs. the Tides at The Diamond last season. The Braves are 7-12 vs. the South Division, 3-6 at The Diamond. The Braves are fourth in the South, 19 games behind the first place Tides. Richmond has lost a season high and club record tying nine straight games and 11 of their last 12. The Tides have beaten the Braves four straight times. The Braves are 348-393 all-time vs. the Tides.
YESTERDAY'S GAMES: The Toledo Mud Hens swept a doubleheader from the Braves at The Diamond Friday, blanking the Braves 9-0 in each game. Toledo took advantage of big innings and strong pitching to send the Braves down to their eighth and ninth straight losses. Toledo blew game one open with a four run first inning. Marcus Thames and Mike Hessman knocked in runs with singles and Alexis Gomez chased two home with a double. The Hens piled on three more runs in the second. Curtis Granderson ripped an RBI triple. Ryan Rayburn drilled an RBI double and a run scored on an error. The Hens tacked on two more in the seventh on a Rayburn RBI triple and an RBI single from Hessman. Jason Grilli pitched the distance for the shutout win. It was his third complete game and second shutout of the season. Daniel Curtis took the loss. In game two the Hens jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a first inning Marcus Thames home run. Toledo busted the game open with a five run third inning that featured two runs walked in, RBI singles by Alexis Gomez and Thames, and a Jason Smith sac fly. The Hens tacked on three more runs with back to back seventh inning homers by Carlos Pena and Mike Hessman. Kenny Baugh worked six scoreless innings to earn the win. Zach Miner took the loss.
AS THE ROSTER TURNS: Atlanta optioned RHP Jorge Vasquez to Richmond. He was 1-0 3.00 in seven games with the A-Braves. Richmond placed Bill McCarthy (ankle) and Sam McConnell (elbow) on the DL just prior to yesterday's games. The active roster now stands at 22 (12 pitchers, two catchers, four infielders, and four outfielders with four players on the DL). The Braves have made 82 roster moves this season and lost 210 man-games to the disabled list. Nine Braves have earned big league call-ups this season and five are currently with Atlanta (Marte, Roman Colon, Kyle Davies, Kelly Johnson, and John Foster). The other four big league call-ups were Frank Brooks, Matt Childers, Seth Greisinger, and Brayan Pena. Nine Braves have been placed on the DL this season.
BY THE NUMBERS: The R-Braves have tied a club record for consecutive losses with nine. The Braves lost nine straight in 1969 (July 30-August 6) and and 1986 (May 25-June 6). Kerry Robinson's four game hitting streak ended yesterday. John Barnes four game hitting streak ended yesterday. The Braves are last in the IL in batting average, runs, home runs, strikeouts, and walks issued. Esix Snead leads the IL in stolen bases. Recent R-Braves acquisition Kerry Robinson still leads the PCL in steals with 26. The Braves have been outscored 47-10 on the homestand. Braves starting pitchers have allowed 17 runs in the last three games over 5.1 innings (28.86 ERA). Braves starters had allowed three or fewer runs in 15 of the previous 20 games. Jason Childers went 16.1 innings without allowing a home run this season prior to giving up back to back shots last night.
