Richar's Ninth Inning Triple Propels Louisville to Series Split

INDIANAPOLIS -- Louisville rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to beat Indianapolis 4-1 on Saturday evening in front of 15,066 in the final game of the season at Victory Field.

Danny Richar, who came in as a pinch-hitter in the eighth and stayed in the game, knocked in the deciding run for the Bats with a triple.

Indianapolis starter Jimmy Barthmaier and Louisville's Daryl Thompson traded blanks until the Tribe took a 1-0 lead in the fifth. The rally began with a single by Luis Cruz that stretched the shortstop's hitting streak to nine games. Cruz went to second on Barthmaier's sacrifice bunt and scored on a double to right by Chris Duffy.

Barthmaier didn't give up a hit until the seventh, when Drew Stubbs led off with a drive that caromed off the pitcher's right leg for Louisville's first hit. Stubbs took second on Barthmaier's wild throw to first and went to third on an infield out. When Michael Griffin flied to center, Stubbs breezed home with the tying run.

After Barthmaier loaded the bases with a walk, a single and another base on balls, and Evan Meek came on in relief to end the inning.

Meek pitched his way out of another bases-loaded fix in the eighth. The right-hander opened the frame with walks to Richar, who batted for relief pitcher Jared Burton, and Luis Bolivar. After Stubbs looked at a called third strike, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Meek intentionally walked Drew Anderson, and then fanned Griffin and Shaun Cumberland to retire the side.

The Bats broke through in the ninth against Franquelis Osoria, who replaced Meek. Osoria gave up a one-out walk to Paul Janish and struck out Craig Tatum. But Richar, who remained in the game at second base, tripled to right-center for a 2-1 score. Luis Bolivar's double plated Richar, and Bolivar came home on a stolen base and wild pitch.

Carlos Fisher (5-0), the third of four Louisville pitchers, got the win while Osoria (2-1) took the loss. Jon Adkins blanked the Indians in the bottom of the ninth for his 29th save.

Saturday's crowd of 15,066 brought the year's attendance to 606.166, the best regular-season figure since 2000.

The Indians head to Louisville for their final series of the year. Sunday's 6:15 p.m. contest will see Mike Thompson (3-3) starting for the Tribe against Louisville left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (14-6).
