Richards named starter to CHL All-Star Game

ALBUQUERQUE – The Central Hockey League announced today that New Mexico Scorpions center Chris Richards has been named a starting forward to the league's All-Star Game, to be played on Thursday, Jan. 23 in Oklahoma City. Richards is the Scorpions' leading scorer and currently ranks tied for fifth in the CHL with 44 points (20g-24a) in 28 games.

The 27 year-old native of Cornwall, Ontario was the Scorpions' leading scorer last season as well, with 66 points (27g-39a) in 64 games. He is in his third season in the CHL after splitting the 2000-01 campaign with Indianapolis and Macon.

"It's a well-deserved honor for Chris," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald. "He works hard every shift and he's played well all season, when I was in Lubbock and especially since I've come here to New Mexico. It's great to see him recognized by people around the league.

Other Southern Conference All-Star starters as named today are: forwards Eric Schneider of Laredo and Blaz Emersic of Lubbock; defensemen Scott Hillman of Odessa and Michel Periard of Laredo and goaltender Matt Barnes of Austin. The reserves will be selected by Southern Conference coach Brent Hughes of Austin and announced by the CHL on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Richards and the Scorpions return to action on Friday, Jan. 3 when they visit the Amarillo Gorillas. Faceoff is 6:11 p.m. MST. The Scorpions return home on Saturday, Jan. 4 when they host the San Angelo Saints. Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. at Tingley Coliseum. The first 1,000 fans will receive a FREE Scorpions visor. The Scorpions conclude a busy week on Sunday, Jan. 5 when they host McDonald's former team, the Lubbock Cotton Kings for a 3:05 p.m. matinee.
