Rochester Rhinos News Release
It was a beautiful night in Rochester as the Rhinos took on the Lansdowne Bhoys in the Third Round of the U.S Open Cup.
The first five minutes were in favor of the Rochester Rhinos when they saw a corner and two free kicks- both just outside of the eighteen. Unsuccessful on the follow through, Christian Volesky had another opportunity to strike early for the Rhinos but couldn't get a touch on the ball and it rolled directly in Lansdowne Bhoy's goalkeeper Abdoukarim's hands. Opportunities kept presenting itself for Rochester throughout the first half, but they had trouble finishing.
The Lansdowne Bhoys were not without their own opportunities seeing five shots on goal in the first half themselves. While the Rhinos dominated play and maintained a majority of possession, the Bhoys managed to facilitate plays that broke through the Rhinos defense and challenged goalkeeper Gomez.
Guilavogui controlled the right sideline, sending consistent crosses into the box, but the Rhinos couldn't find feet and failed to finish in the first. Abdoukarim was a wall in the Lansdowne net saving all five of the Rhinos shots. The teams went into the half 0-0.
The Rhinos received a free kick in the 59' when Samuels was pushed from behind. Lansdowne received a yellow card for their efforts, and a Rhinos goal when Andre Fortune II sent the free kick sailing up and over the wall into the back of the net. Volesky followed up with a rocket in the 70' to make it 2-0 Rochester and give the team a comfortable lead going into the last half of the game.
Play picked up evenly on both sides towards the end of the match with the Lansdowne Bhoys actually outshooting the Rhinos 12-11. Overall it was a very competitive game by both teams, with the Rhinos coming out on top 2-0.
Next the Rochester Rhinos face the MLS New York Red Bull's at home on June 15. All tickets for the match will be $20.00 and are available online at rhinossoccer.com, by calling 454-KICK, or by emailing Tickets@rhinossoccer.com.
