RGV FC Sign Defender Tomas Ritandole
March 9, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC today announced the addition of defender Tomas Ritondale to the 2023 USL Championship roster as a USL Academy signing, pending league and federation approval.
As USL Academy signings, players are available for selection by the Toros in USL Championship play throughout the 2023 season while retaining their NCAA eligibility as well as being available for selection to represent RGV FC Academy at official competitions.
Ritondale (20-year-old) earned a first team roster spot after a successful trial period in the 2023 preseason, directly competing with experienced defenders and attackers on the RGV FC roster as well as preseason opponents in recent matches.
The dynamic defender stood out to RGV FC Sporting Director Wilmer Cabrera at a Miami Soccer Academy showcase event in the 2022-23 offseason and was approached with the opportunity to join the RGV FC USL Academy system as a prospect for the first team in the upcoming 2023 campaign.
Cabrera provided insight on his decision to pursue Ritondale with an offer; "Tomas is a very young, talented player with a great foundation of soccer who was raised and developed in Argentina. He returned to the United States and had a great campaign with Miami United. Now, with his development and going through the scouting process with our close partnership with the United States Soccer League (USSL) we are able to bring Tomas' qualities to the Toros for the season."
Prior organized soccer experience dates back to the recent 2022 season; Tomas appeared in a single international friendly match with NPSL club Miami United on June 17, 2022, playing 90-minutes against Club de Futbol Pachuca of Liga MX. The Argentinian made an appearance in a U.S Open Cup second round match against USL Championship side Miami FC on April 7, 2022 as Miami United fell 3-0.
RGV FC opens USL Championship play as they face Las Vegas Lights FC at H-E-B Park on Sunday, March 12 with a scheduled kickoff time of 7pm CST.
