Revs Swept By Surging Blue Crabs
June 20, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution suffered a season-high fourth consecutive loss, and just their second sweep of the season, losing to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4-2 in front of 3,916 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Thursday evening. The Revs (31-28) will look to rebound when they host the Somerset Patriots as the homestand continues on Friday night.
Southern Maryland took an early lead scoring an unearned run in the first on a double by Jose Julio-Ruiz who picked up his first of three hits on the night, extending his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games. Jeremy Owens then launched a solo home run to left with two outs in the second, giving the Blue Crabs a 2-0 lead.
Andy Marte connected on a home run to left-center leading off the bottom of the second, tying for the team lead with nine long balls on the season as he has now gone deep in back-to-back games.
Both starters, York's Rick Zagone and Southern Maryland's Michael Ballard, escaped bases loaded jams in the fourth keeping it a 2-1 score.
Ryan Mulhern extended Southern Maryland's lead to 4-1 with a two-out, two-run homer to left-center in the fifth inning, and the Revs never threatened again.
Ballard (4-3) settled in to retire 11 straight before Eric Patterson reached on a leadoff triple in the eighth inning that Owens lost sight of in the sky in center field. Patterson scored on a groundout to short by Wilson Batista, but the Revs never brought the tying run to the plate, as reliever Eduardo Morlan recorded the final two outs in the eighth, and Jim Ed Warden tossed a perfect ninth for his 16th save. Ballard allowed just six hits, walked none, and struck out a season-best eight in a season-high 7.1 innings.
Zagone (1-1) suffered his first loss, charged with four runs, three earned in 4.2 innings of work.
Friday's opener against Somerset is set for 6:30 p.m. with York's Brett Tomko (2-5, 5.34) facing Somerset's Josh Lowey (6-3, 4.02). It is Boy Scout Night #1 with a postgame on-field sleepover. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
