New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution will host LIGA MX club Atlas FC in the Leagues Cup Round of 32 on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium. Thursday's knockout stage match kicks off at 8:00 p.m. ET and is available to watch FREE on Apple TV in English and Spanish. Tony Husband and Ross Smith will call the match in English, while Bruno Vain and Andres Agulla will provide Spanish commentary. The match can also be heard on the radio locally in Portuguese on 1260 AM Nossa Radio USA.
New England advanced to the Leagues Cup knockout stage following last Wednesday's 5-1 win over Atlético de San Luis, helping the team to a second-place finish in East 4 group play. Forward Giacomo Vrioni propelled New England to victory with a three-goal performance, marking the club's first hat trick in international competition. Vrioni netted two goals in the first half, both assisted by forward Gustavo Bou, before closing the scoring with a second-half tally on a Brandon Bye assist to seal the victory. The Albanian striker owns eight goals scored across all competitions in 2023.
Bou also featured in the scoring, finishing his performance with one goal and two assists. The Argentine striker is one of two players on New England's roster with LIGA MX experience, along with defender Omar Gonzalez, who featured for Atlas from 2018-19 in one of his four seasons in the Mexican first division. Bou starred for Club Tijuana for three seasons from 2017-2019 before arriving in New England, where he has since ranked among the league's top-five goal scorers since his MLS debut in 2019.
Thursday's match marks the New England Revolution's 1,000th competitive match since the team's inaugural 1996 season, though it is only the club's 13th meeting with a LIGA MX opponent. New England and Atlas FC have met once previously, when the Revolution recorded a 1-0 shutout win in the group stage of North American SuperLiga in 2009. With last Wednesday's victory over Atlético de San Luis, the Revolution improved their all-time record against LIGA MX opponents to 9-2-1, including a 9-1-1 mark at home.
Atlas FC advanced to the Leagues Cup Round of 32 as the East 3 group winner, following a pair of shutout victories over New York City FC and Toronto FC by 1-0 scorelines. Atlas owns a 1-1-1 record through their first three matches in the LIGA MX Apertura. With a win on Thursday, the Revolution will advance to the Leagues Cup Round of 16 to host the winner between Pumas UNAM and Querétaro. If the match is tied after 90 minutes, a winner will be decided in a shootout from the penalty spot.
