POSTGAME QUOTES:
New England Revolution II 0 at Forward Madison FC 1
New England Revolution II Head Coach Clint Peay
On Wednesday's loss:
Peay: "I thought the guys played a really good game. I thought we created some chances, we tried different ways to get at them, but were unsuccessful obviously with the final product. I thought for large stretches of the game we defended very well and limited a very good team to very few opportunities and ultimately the goal they score is an elementary mistake by us by not tracking a guy when it was a simple play to be made."
On what Madison did to frustrate the New England attack:
Peay: "They sat in a low block and a lot of numbers behind the ball and tried to limit the spaces for us to attack in behind. So, anytime any team does that it's always going to be challenging and more difficult to penetrate them to create opportunities."
On Ryan Sierakowski slotting in for the injured Connor Presley:
Peay: "First of all, [Connor] Presley is a tireless engine on the wing who provides service and really stretches the defense. So, we missed that. But I thought Ryan did a did a good job out there and had moments where he was able to be in good positions to either provide service or get on the end of a cross and threaten the goal a little bit."
On Hikaru Fujiwara getting his second start of the season:
Peay: "[Hikaru] Fujiwara is probably a little bit more of a creative attacking player than Noel [Buck]. I think we just wanted to rotate the squad as well and give another young guy an opportunity to perform and rest our legs as we play three games in a short amount of time."
On breaking down Madison's high line:
Peay: "I'm happy with how the team performed. Again, I thought they tried different looks and different ways to get at Madison. It's just when you give up a goal and a team decides to pack it in, it becomes a challenge. Unfortunately, we had some chances, but unfortunately, we didn't put them away."
New England Revolution II Midfielder Jake Rozhansky
On what was missing the attack:
Rozhansky: "I think we got into good areas, I think we did create the chances, we needed to get some goals. I do think it was a different game than last week. [Forward Madison] really showed us a lot of respect and sat everybody back so we had a little bit of trouble breaking that down. But overall, I do think we had the chances to get a couple of goals and if we would have got one, I think that would've opened them up. And unfortunately, we just couldn't finish our chances, which is a little bit different than last game where I don't think we had the ball as much and controlled the game as much but the chances that we did create it, we finished."
On limiting Forward Madison's chances offensively:
Rozhansky: "Honestly I think the best thing we did was we controlled the game. I think that our attack is the best defense for controlling the game or defending less. I can only really think about maybe two or three uncomfortable situations for us defensively and one of them was the goal. But I do think because [Forward Madison] showed us a lot of respect and they dropped everybody back, that we had the ball a lot, so we weren't defending as much."
On taking care of the ball in possession:
Rozhansky: "I think we were missing you know a little bit of creativity in the attack. A little disguised pass, something creative to just break them down. But we did a good job of keeping the ball, but in this game it wasn't enough. We need to create more in those games. We need to counter-attack better when we don't have the ball and when they're open, and I think that's something we need to work on."
On playing at Madison twice in 10 days:
Rozhansky: "We knew coming into the game that we beat them 10 days ago so they're going to come out and play us really hard. I do think we were ready; I do think we had an okay game, but we just didn't take care of those moments that can change the game. But now this game is over, we have to learn from it, and we have a game again on Sunday, so we have to already prepare for that game."
