Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS -- Ben Revere's bases-loaded double down the right-field line capped a thrilling comeback for Fort Myers (5-2), which defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads (2-5) in the rubber match of a three-game series at Hammond Stadium on Thursday. Trailing 3-1, Revere came to the plate with the bags packed and one out before he delivered a fly ball double on a 2-0 count. The Miracle mobbed each other at home plate in celebration after struggling to break through all game long against some tough Jupiter pitching. The win went to Spencer Steedley (1-0), who recorded two outs in the top of the ninth.
The Hammerheads' Blake Jones (0-1) took a blown save and the loss after giving up three hits and three runs, all of them earned. Taking no decisions were both starters who pitched well for their respective clubs. For Jupiter, Kyle Winters shut out the Miracle in six innings, scattering five hits, walking one, and fanning four. His counterpart David Bromberg pitched five strong innings of his own, surrending a solo home run to Thomas Hickman in the fifth as the only run he allowed, along with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Miracle loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning and a 0-0 score, but the next two hitters went in order and all three runners were stranded. Trailing 3-1 to start the ninth, Danny Berg and Mark Dolenc led off with back-to-back singles. After a Jair Fernandez sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third, Steve Singleton was called upon to pinch-hit with one out. Singleton drew a hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Ben Revere. After two balls thrown by Jones, Revere drilled a fly ball down the line in right, landing several feet fair, and all three runners came around to score for the walk-off victory. The leadoff man and centerfielder now leads the club with seven RBI. The Miracle will board the bus for a three-game series against the St. Lucie Mets starting Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard online at miraclebaseball.com or on True Oldies in Fort Myers (1410 AM) and Naples (1660 AM).
