Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Sacramento, Calif. - Republic FC bested New Mexico United 1-0 at Heart Health Park on Saturday night, advancing on to the Western Conference Semifinal round of the 2023 USL Championship Playoffs.
In the two sides' second playoff meeting in as many seasons, an early goal and stellar defensive performance propelled Republic FC to a strong first-round victory. The Indomitable Club will host San Antonio FC in the second round - who bested Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1-0 earlier in the evening.
Republic FC opened the scoring in the 13th minute, breaking through on a recycled set piece opportunity. With the ball at his feet on the left flank, Rodrigo Lopez served Conor Donovan crashing the net, who headed it home for his first goal of 2023. Lopez's fifth all-time postseason assist for Republic FC extended his lead atop the club's all-time playoff leaderboard.
The club nearly doubled its advantage at the tail end of the first half, and again at the start of the second. A quick counterattack put Jack Gurr into space in front of goal as the 45th minute came to a close. Gurr nearly scored again in the 68th minute when he got his head on a Luis Felipe cross, but was denied by the left post.
A stellar performance on the defensive end clamped down New Mexico's attack in the second half. Republic FC held the Albuquerque club to just two shots in the final 45 minutes - and to just one on-target for the game. The effort required just two saves from Danny Vitiello - resulting in the club's second straight clean sheet.
Republic FC's postseason journey continues next Friday, October 27 when the club hosts 4th seed San Antonio FC. Kickoff from Heart Health Park is set for 7:30 p.m. and tickets will go on sale to the public on Monday at 10:00 a.m. For more information on the match - including early access to tickets, visit SacRepublicFC.com/Playoffs.
