Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws were poised to take the opener of a three-game series with Reno, but the Silver Sox rallied to wipe out a two-run deficit with three 9th inning runs, then withstood the Outlaws attempt at a come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the 9th to beat Chico 8-7 Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium.

After splitting a four-game set in Reno, the Outlaws and Silver Sox met up again in Chico, and Reno was quick to get on the board - in the top of the 1st inning Juan Senreiso knocked in a run with a two-out single to left and scored on Jose Rodriguez' bloop double to right to put the Silver Sox up 2-0. Reno starting pitcher Dusty Bergman made the lead stand up until the 4th, when Chico batted around to take a three run lead - Brock Ungricht's two-out single drove home Daniel Nava and Jason Van Meetren with the tying runs...then following a walk to Jason Matteucci, Eric Pringle shot a hot grounder past third baseman Carlos Madrid and down the left field line; the double plated Ungricht and Jake Ferris to put the Outlaws in front...before the inning was over, Matteucci scored from third on a passed ball to give Chico a 5-2 lead.

Reno came back with two runs in the 6th off Outlaws starter Nick Singleton (Sam Walker doubled home Mike Done and scored on a Maurice Cole single)...then in the 7th Victor Hall launched a solo homer to right off reliever John Segovia to tie the game. Chico went back in front 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the 7th - Pringle led off with a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on a flyout and scored on a Jesse Kovacs groundout. The Outlaws extended their lead to 7-5 when Daniel Nava doubled to lead off the 8th and scored three batters later on an Ungricht sacrifice fly. The stage was set for GBL saves leader Todd Gelatka to close things out in the 9th, but the Silver Sox had other ideas - with one out, Hall walked and went to third on Senreiso's solid single to left. After Senreiso stole second, Kane Simmons shot a soft liner to center to plate both runners and tie the score...when Matteucci's throw to the plate went to the backstop, Simmons advanced to second on the error and came home with what proved to be the winning run on a line single to left off the bat of Madrid. Now down 8-7, the Outlaws rallied in the bottom of the 9th, putting the tying and winning runs in position with nobody out...but Reno closer Eric Thomas got Steve Boggs to fly out to shallow right, struck out Kovacs looking and got Dragicevich on a comebacker to the mound to thwart the late-inning threat and give the Silver Sox the victory.

Adam Nikolic (3-0), the second of three Reno pitchers, got credit for the win, with Thomas picking up his first save of the season...Gelatka (2-1) was saddled with the loss. The Silver Sox had 16 hits on the night, with Cole and Senreiso both going 3-for-5...Kovacs and Pringle each had two safeties to lead the Outlaws 10-hit attack. Saturday's loss dropped Chico to 1-2 in the second half and 26-15 overall...Reno improved to 2-1 in the second half and 20-20 on the year. Game two of the series is set for Sunday with the Outlaws sending right-hander Tyler Pearson (3-3) to the mound...the Silver Sox are expected to counter with righty Matt Parris (4-5). Game time is 6:05pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 5:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
