Yuma Scorpions News Release
RENO, Nev. -- Behind the hitting of Jose Rodriguez, Mike Done and Cody Nowlin, the Reno Silver Sox pounded the Yuma Scorpions 13-8 Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park.
Rodriguez was a game-high 4 for 5, including three RBIs and Done and Nowlin each had two hits, as the Silver Sox (9-13) had 15 hits and sent nine batters to the plate in three different innings.
Newcomer Ryan Brown also two hits, including a three-run home run in the eighth inning.
The Scorpions (13-11) scored first on a solo home run by Gabriel Mayorga but were unable to do much until the score was 6-1 in favor of Reno after a six-run fifth inning.
The Silver Sox sent 11 batters to the plate in that inning, scoring six on just three hits.
Yuma battled back, tying the score at 6-6 following a five-run seventh inning. The visitors had three hits and five successive runs in the inning before the Silver Sox exploded in the final two frames.
Reno rattled off three runs in the seventh inning and then four more in the eighth, giving them a 13-6 cushion going into the ninth inning.
The Scorpions did have 10 hits, a first during this 15-game road trip, but it wasn't enough at they stranded seven runners, including leaving the bases loaded twice.
Hector Bernal was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored from the leadoff position and Mayorga was 2 for 4 from the No. 2 batter's spot. Tank Peterson also had two hits, including an RBI but the Scorpions' offense couldn't overcome the hot offense from Reno.
Steve Soja was given his third loss of the season as he allowed nine runs on eight hits, two of the runs being earned. Eric Maydew came in relief, allowing seven hits and four runs. Reno starter James Johnson allowed six runs, three earned while striking out two.
Yuma will be in St. George, Utah on tonight to face the Roadrunners for the first time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and all action can be heard on yumascorpions.com and KBLU 560 AM.
