Today's Game: Winners of five straight, the Aces look to return back to Greater Nevada Field Monday with a series sweep from Southwest University Park. Left-hander Alex Young will take the mound for Greg Gross, in search of his fourth Triple-A victory. Ildemaro Vargas is riding a 17-game hit streak and Christian Walker has homered in three consecutive games.
Last Game: Christian Walker and the Aces homered past the El Paso Chihuahuas in both games of the doubleheader yesterday. The Aces won game one 7-3 and game two by a score of 4-1. Christian Walker (13) and Kevin Cron (17) both homered in game two while Jake Winston won his first Triple-A game and Jimmie Sherfy recorded his 11th save of the year.
Going Streaking: Ildemaro Vargas has set a new 2018 personal-best, reaching base safely via a hit in 17 consecutive games. Vargas is 28-for-77 (.364) with 11 runs scored 11 RBI and six extra-base hits. Vargas holds the second-longest active streak in the Pacific Coast League (Mauricio Dubon of Colorado Springs, 23 games). His performance yesterday passed his previous streak of 16 games (05/29/18 to 06/17/18).
MVP-ing: Christian Walker has put on a show since arriving in Texas on
Thursday. In three games played, Walker is 5-for-11 with four runs scored, three home runs, and eight RBI. The reigning Pacific Coast League MVP is batting.400 in his last 10 games with 13 runs scored, four home runs and 13 RBI. He's hit 13 home runs in 2018 to add to his 32 last season. His 158 RBI over the past two season are the most of any Aces player since 2017.
Sherfy Save: Jimmie Sherfy's save in game two yesterday was his 11th of the season and 43rd of his Aces career. In 96 save opportunities, Sherfy has recorded 77 saves since 2013. He is the Aces All-Time saves leader. Jake Barrett and Silvino Bracho are right behind Sherfy with 32 and 27, respectively.
Cron's July: Kevin Cron has been dominant in the month of July. In 10 games, Cron is batting .457 (10-for-35) with 10 runs scored and four home runs. His three home runs away from his fourth consecutive 20 home run season. Cron's 17 blasts lead the Aces this season.
On this Day in Baseball History: On this day in 2004, Eric Gagne surpasses Jeff Shaw for the most career saves in franchise history, collecting his 130th save in a Dodger uniform. The 28-year-old right-handed closer pitches a perfect ninth, striking out the side, in the team's 5-2 victory over Arizona at Bank One Ballpark.
Neftali The Starter: Neftali Feliz is 2-0 in July after making three starts. He had not started a game since 2013, but has found success as of late. In three starts, the right-hander has tossed 14 innings, allowed 13 hits, four earned runs and struck out seven.
