Tacoma Rainiers News Release
The Tacoma Rainiers (79-61) played into extra innings for the second consecutive night on Friday, this time falling by a score of 2-1 to the Reno Aces (75-66) at Cheney Stadium.
Rainiers starting pitcher Cody Martin held the Aces scoreless on just four hits while issuing no walks and striking out eight - he did not factor into the decision.
No Tacoma players logged multiple hits, as the offense combined for just four base knocks over the course of the night.
Third baseman Zach Shank led off the bottom of the fifth inning for Tacoma with a single and came around to score the game's first run on an RBI double from left fielder Mike Baxter. It was Baxter's first hit since returning from the disabled list on August 30, and it gave the Rainiers a 1-0 edge.
Pinch hitter Mitch Haniger kick-started a quick Reno rally with a leadoff double in the top of the eighth. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and came in to tie the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly from Chris Hermann.
Reno grabbed the lead with a one-out solo home run in the top of the 11th inning from Zach Borenstein. His eighth home run of the season would provide the difference in the Aces 2-1 victory.
Emilio Pagan (1-2) worked the top of the 11th inning, allowing the go-ahead run and taking his second loss of the season.
Tacoma is expected to send right-hander Zach Lee (0-8, 7.08) to the mound as they continue their series with Reno tomorrow, Saturday, September 3. The Aces have yet to announce a starting pitcher. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
