Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - A ninth-inning RBI double by second baseman Vidal Brujan, and a tremendous pitching performance by reliever Zack Mozingo gave the Renegades a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters Monday night at Centennial Field.
The Lake Monsters struck first in the third inning. With two out and the bases empty, designated hitter Jordan Devencenzi lined a single to center then scored on a two-run homer to right by rightfielder Greg Deichmann Jr. to give Vermont a 2-0 lead. It was Deichmann ' s second homerun of the year.
In the fifth, the Renegades struck for four runs to take the lead. Centerfielder Emilio Gustave lined a single to left and rightfielder Angel Perez roped a double to center to put runners at second and third to start the inning. Leftfielder Oscar Rojas followed next and skied a sacrifice fly to center to score Gustave and bring the Renegades to within one. Catcher Jean Ramirez stepped up next and drilled his first homerun of the year, a two-run blast over the centerfield wall, to put Hudson Valley in front 3-2. It was Ramirez ' s first homer of the season.
After a coaching visit to the mound for Lake Monsters starting pitcher Oscar Tovar, it was Hudson Valley shortstop Deion Tansel who came to the plate next and belted his first round-tripper of the year, a solo shot to left, to push the Renegades lead to 4-2.
Vermont got a run back in the bottom-half of the fifth on yet another longball. With one out it was centerfielder Jack Meggs going deep to right-centerfield field on a solo shot to make the score 4-3. It was the third and final hit allowed by Hudson Valley starter Jhonleider Salinas, two of which left the yard in 4.2 innings of work. He also struck out four and walked five batters in receiving a no-decision.
The Lake Monsters tried to retake the lead in the sixth as two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. However, Hudson Valley reliever Andrew Gist got Meggs to strike out swinging and Devencenzi grounded into a fielder ' s choice to end the threat.
However, the Renegades bullpen would doom them again as the Lake Monsters plated two runs in the seventh to retake the lead. Reliever Sam Long replaced Gist and started the inning by giving up a walk to Deichmann and a bunt single to third baseman Will Toffey. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before Long got first baseman Aaron Arruda to strike out swinging for out number two. Needing only one more out to get out of the jam Long gave up a two-run single to right to second baseman Javier Godard to make the score 5-4.
Hudson Valley got off the deck to tie the game in the eighth. Brujan started the inning with a single to center. After a lineout, first baseman Brendan McKay grounded a ball to Godard at second. Godard tried to retire Brujan on a fielder ' s choice attempt at second, but the throw was late putting runners at first and second with one out. After a fly out, Gustave grounded a single into leftfield to score Brujan and tie the game at five apiece.
Vermont had a chance to take the lead back in the bottom of the eighth as two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out to begin the inning. Long was lifted for Mozingo who came in and got Devencenzi to ground to second for the beginning of a 4-2-3 double play. Mozingo then got Deichmann to fly out to left to end the inning.
The Renegades then caught a huge break as they took the lead in the ninth. With nobody on and two out, reliever Logan Salow appeared to be out of the inning when he got Tansel to pop up to center. However, Meggs dropped the running attempt at a catch and kept the inning alive for Brujan who sent a double down the rightfield line allowing Tansel to score from first with a slide on a close play at the plate.
Mozingo (1-0) then struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first win of the year as he tossed two hitless innings of scoreless baseball while striking out three. Salow (1-2) suffered the loss for the Lake Monsters after he gave up the unearned game-winning run in the ninth. He went an inning, walked one, and struck out two others.
The Renegades had eight hits including a 2-5 performance from Brujan who doubled, scored a run, and drove in the game-winner. Gustave went 2-4 with a run scored and another driven in himself. Tansel scored twice for Hudson Valley, once on his homerun in the fourth, and the second time as the game-winning run in the ninth. The Lake Monsters had nine hits. Shortstop Ryan Gridley went 2-5 and Iolana Akau went 2-4. Each had two singles. In addition to his two-run blast, Deichmann also scored twice for Vermont and walked three times.
Hudson Valley continues its three-game series at Vermont tomorrow as they take on the Lake Monsters in game two. First-pitch is slated for 7:05. Renegades righthander Mikey York (1-1, 1.64 ERA) will take on fellow righty Abdiel Mendoza (2-1, 2.55 ERA) of the Lake Monsters. The Renegades return home on July 23rd when they take on the Connecticut Tigers in the first of a three-game series. First-pitch is at 7:05 and fireworks will follow the game.
