Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
LOWELL, MA (Sunday, August 19): The Hudson Valley Renegades held on late to defeat the Lowell Spinners 2-1 Sunday in front of 5,537 fans at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. The Renegades (39-20) picked up their second consecutive win and fourth in five on this current road trip, clipping the Spinners (28-31) in front of their home fans. Hudson Valley continued their strong play in the month of August, now 10-4 since the calendar flipped over from July.
The 'Gades opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Joey Rickard drew a leadoff walk from Lowell starter Justin Haley, and moved up to second base on a wild pitch. Second baseman Tommy Coyle chopped a ground out to shortstop, allowing Rickard to reach third. Designated hitter Richie Shaffer bounced his own ground out to Mike Miller at shortstop, giving Rickard enough time to speed home and score the first run to make it 1-0 Hudson Valley.
Lowell couldn't manage much of anything against 'Gades starter Sean Bierman (4-2) over his first six innings, as he allowed just two hits against five strikeouts. In the seventh, though, they finally broke through against him. Deven Marrero worked a leadoff walk, and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dreily Guerrero. David Chester singled up the middle to move Marrero to third; he would have scored then but for a tremendous diving stop by Coyle. With one out, Mookie Betts lofted a soft pop fly to center field; Rickard fired home after making the catch, but catcher Jake DePew's tag was just a little to slow to prevent Marrero from scoring. The inning ended with the score tied 1-1.
Hudson Valley retook the lead in the top of the eighth against Spinners reliever Francisco Taveras (4-2). Left fielder Joel Caminero drew a leadoff walk, and DePew wrangled his own free pass to put runners on first and second with no outs. Right fielder Charles Epperson popped out behind first base to bring up Rickard. Taveras uncorked a wild pitch that advanced the runners to second and third, and was forced to intentionally walk Rickard to load the bases. Coyle had a typically patient plate appearance, and earned a crucial walk to bring home Caminero for the go-ahead run. The Spinners got the potential tying run on in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Jordan Harrison was able to put them away without any score to end the ballgame.
Bierman earned the victory with a superb start, allowing a run on three hits and a walk over seven innings; he struck out six. Harrison earned the save in his New York-Penn League debut, giving up one hit against two strikeouts in his two innings of action.
Haley allowed a run on two hits and a walk in three innings, striking out two. Taveras took the loss for Lowell, surrendering a run on one hit and four walks against four whiffs in five innings. Greg Larson pitched a spotless ninth inning for the Spinners.
The Renegades will go for the sweep Monday against the Spinners, with righty Eduar Quiñonez on the hill for Hudson Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, Ben Gellman's pregame show set for 6:50 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
