Renegades Outslug Yankees in Offensive Showdown

Staten Island, NY (7/6/2014)- The Hudson Valley Renegades won 7-6 over the Staten Island Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Sunday evening, giving them their eighth consecutive win. With the victory, Hudson Valley improves to 16-5 overall, the best record in the New York-Penn League. In a contest that featured four lead changes, the Renegades put together seven runs on eleven hits. After falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, they rallied for three of their own in the top of the fifth. Staten Island would go on to take the lead one more time before losing it for good after a Renegade two-run top of the seventh inning.

Chris Pike started the game on the hill for Hudson Valley and went four innings in his second start of 2014. The righty struck out four and departed with his team up 3-2 as Darren Fischer came on to take his place. Fischer and Eli Echarry combined for five innings pitched with six strikeouts and four runs. Fischer earned the win and Echarry came on to pick up the save, striking out the final batter he faced to end the game.

Offensively, Sunday's contest featured a combined twenty-three hits and thirteen runs. Every hitter that Hudson Valley sent to the plate came away with at least one base-hit, as Alec Sole and Braxton Lee each had two. Casey Gillaspie drove in two runs and Hunter Lockwood drove in one, with the Renegades scoring three unearned runs off of three Yankee errors.

After a full slate of games on Sunday, Hudson Valley leads Brooklyn by four games in first place of the McNamara Division. Staten Island is now 5.5 games back in third, and Aberdeen 11.5 games back in fourth. The Renegades are the only team this season to put together a six, seven, or eight game winning streak. Their 10-2 home record is also the best of anybody else in the NYPL.

Notes: Jace Conrad, Hunter Lockwood and Coty Blanchard are all in the top twenty hitters in the league. The Renegades pitching staff features a league best 2.44 earned run average, as they also have the lowest total of earned runs (54) and walks (59).

The Renegades are on the road in Brooklyn on Monday and Tuesday to face the Cyclones. They return home Wednesday to take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at 7:05 PM.
