Tigers & Lake Monsters Split Doubleheader

Norwich, CT - In game one of the double header the Connecticut Tigers (11-11) defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters (8-14) by a score of 5-4 at Dodd Stadium Sunday afternoon. RHP Chase Edwards (3-1) picked up his third win of the season as he pitched 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on six hits and struck out three batters.

The Tigers offense did not give much run support for Edwards, but put up enough runs on the scoreboard to secure a one run victory. The Tigers grabbed offensive contributions from 3B Joey Pankake (1-1) as he had a two RBI performance. Pankake put the Tigers in front early with a first inning RBI single. Pankake would later hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning which accounted for his second RBI. 2B Domingo Leyba (1-3) had a first inning RBI single as the Tigers set the tone in the first with their two runs scored.

Tigers RHP Gage Smith picked up his first save as a member of the Connecticut Tigers. Smith pitched 1.2 innings while allowing one run on three hits. Smith was able to get Vermont's LF Justin Higley (2-4) to groundout into a game ending double play.

In game two of the double header the Lake Monsters (9-14) defeated the Tigers (11-12) by a score of 5-2. LF Justin Higley (1-3) had one hit in the game along with a two RBI performance. In the final game of the regular season between the Lake Monsters and Tigers, Higley finished with three homeruns and 16 RBI's against the Tigers as he appeared in all 10 games played.

The Tigers offense struggled in the second game of the double header. As a team they managed to pick up two runs on seven hits. CF Ross Kivett (1-3) and C Michael Thomas each picked up an RBI for the Tigers. It was Thomas's first RBI as a member of the Connecticut Tigers.

The Lake Monsters used three pitchers for the seven inning win. In his first appearance as a member of the Vermont Lake Monsters RHP Corey Walter (1-0) picked up the win in a relief role. Walter pitched three scoreless innings while giving up one hit. RHP Koby Gauna (S, 1) picked up his first save of the season which was also his first appearance of the year for the Lake Monsters.

The Tigers and Tri-City ValleyCats begin a two-game series starting tomorrow night in Troy, NY. Tigers RHP Fernando Perez (1-1, 7.02) is slated to face ValleyCats RHP Troy Scribner (2-1, 1.00). The pregame shows starts at 6:45 p.m. on 1310 WICH and online at www.cttigers.com .
