Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

LOWELL, MA - A three-run single by Hudson Valley first baseman Jacson McGowan in the top of the sixth proved to be the difference as the Renegades came back twice, once from a three-run deficit, to defeat the Lowell Spinners 10-8 Wednesday night at Edward A. LeLacheur Park.

The scoring started with Hudson Valley in the first. With one out and shortstop Tyler Frank at first, catcher Chris Betts lined a double to right to bring in Frank and give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.

Lowell would then use the long ball to surge ahead. In the bottom-half of the first, Tyler Dearden belted a two-run homer to right-centerfield to put the Spinners ahead. The dinger was the first of the year for the Lowell designated hitter. Catcher Alan Marrero would follow-up in the third with a two-run round-tripper of his own, also his first of the year, to leftfield to make the score 4-1.

Hudson Valley came marching back in the third as a two-out, two-run double to right by designated hitter Erik Ostberg scored rightfielder Bryce Brown from second and Frank from first to pull the Renegades to within one.

They would take the lead in the fourth with four more runs as second baseman Justin Bridgman doubled in rightfielder Jake Stone from first to tie the game. Bridgman proceeded to steal third, then scored on a wild pitch from Lowell starter Yorvin Pantoja as Hudson Valley owned a 5-4 lead. Later in the inning, runners got to second and third with one away when centerfielder Tanner Dodson grounded a two-run single to right to put the Renegades up three 7-4.

But the Spinners would not be undone. In the bottom of the fourth, they would plate three more runs to tie the game. A single and two errors, one fielding and one throwing by Renegades third baseman Adrian Rondon, loaded the bases with no one out. Marrero stepped in again and grounded a single to right to make the score 7-5. The next batter, leftfielder Dylan Hardy, grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to plate another run before centerfielder Jarren Duran roped a single to left to score the final run of the inning and knot the game up at seven apiece.

Lowell again went yard, this time in the fifth, to retake the lead. Dearden sent a solo shot over the left-centerfield wall for his second round-tripper of the year to put the Spinners in front 8-7.

But Hudson Valley would respond one more time in the next inning. Two singles and a hit-batsmen loaded the bases with two away when McGowan provided the heroics with his single to left to clear the bases and give the Renegades the lead for good at 10-8.

From there it was relievers Nick Sprengel and Simon Rosenblum-Larson who kept the Spinners off the scoreboard over their final four at-bats. Lowell put two runners on base in the seventh and eighth innings but came up empty. Sprengel and Rosenblum-Larson combined to fire five innings of shutout ball on three hits with four strikeouts. Sprengel (1-0) notched his first professional win, while Roseblum-Larson went the final two frames for his fourth save.

Taking the loss for Lowell was reliever Kevin Biondic (1-1) who allowed three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Neither starter fared well as Pantoja and Hudson Valley's Michael Mercado combined to allow 15 runs. Pantoja went 3.1 innings while Mercado went five-plus.

Though he didn't drive in a run, Brown went 4-5 with three runs scored for Hudson Valley as the Renegades collected 14 hits. Dodson and Bridgman chipped in with two hits apiece. Dodson drove in two runs and scored another while Bridgman scored a run and collected an RBI as well.

Lowell had 11 hits, including a 3-5 night from Dearden who homered, scored twice and drove in three runs. Marrero went 2-4 with a dinger, three RBI and a run scored, while second baseman Andre Colon chipped in with two hits including a double and two runs.

The Renegades will face Lowell in the rubber game of their three-game series tomorrow. First-pitch is scheduled for 6:35. Righty Nick Padilla (2-3, 2.57 ERA) will toe the bump for Hudson Valley against right-hander Thad Ward (0-0, 3.72 ERA) for the Spinners.

The Renegades return home on Monday, July 30th when they open a three-game series and homestand against the Lowell Spinners beginning at 7:05. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
