Fishkill, NY -- The Hudson Valley Renegades (18-15) had the winning run at the plate with two out in the bottom of the 9th tonight at Dutchess Stadium, but 3B Kris Dufner flied out to left field to ensure a 4-2 loss to the visiting New Jersey Cardinals (12-21). The loss was the 'Gades first to the Cardinals at home this season (4-1). Four different Renegades players committed errors as New Jersey ended Hudson Valley's three-game winning streak. Josh Brey (1-2, 3.95) allowed no runs, one hit and two walks while striking out three in 2 1/3 innings to earn the win in relief of starter Dennis Dove. Renegades starter Jino Gonzalez (0-1, 3.00) gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks in three innings to take the loss. He struck out one. Roberto Batista worked the Cards out of a jam in the 9th to earn his fifth save this year.
New Jersey struck quickly, getting two runs in the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by RF Jose Virgil and an RBI groundout by LF Daylon Monette. The Renegades got one back in the bottom of the inning when DH Raymond Serrano's RBI sacrifice fly brought in LF Adam Nikolic. The Cardinals got their last two runs in the third on 3B Melvin Falu's RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI fielder's choice by Monette. The 'Gades added the game's final run in the sixth inning when 2B Jason St. Clair's RBI fielder's choice brought home SS Aneudi Cuevas. CF Mitch Jones was the only 'Gade to get two hits, a single and a double. CF/LF Chris Tuttle led New Jersey by going three for five with two runs scored.
After tonight's game, which was Luggage Tag Night, sponsored by Q92 and Atlas Star, the Hudson Valley Renegades office staff and groundskeepers took on the staff and groundskeepers from the New Jersey Cardinals in a charity benefit game. The 'Gades staffers beat the Cards staffers 9-1 in a five-inning game.
The Renegades head down to Richmond County Bank Ballpark tomorrow night to play their first game of the year against the 2002 New York-Penn League champion Staten Island Yankees. Starting pitchers are unknown at press time. The 'Gades come back home to Dutchess Stadium Tuesday night to host the Yankees on Couch Potato Night, sponsored by WGNY, in which one lucky guy will walk away with a new recliner and big-screen TV set.
