BURLINGTON, VT --- Matt Rico snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run single with two outs in the top of the fifth inning as the Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Vermont Expos 3-1 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Centennial Field.
The Renegades trailed 1-0 when they scored all three of their runs in the fifth off Expos starter Nick Long, who had allowed just 2 hits and struckout six over the first four innings.
But Aneudi Cuevas singled up the middle to leadoff the fifth. After a sacrifice bunt, Mitch Jones singled to center to put runners on the corners. Long struckout Kris Dufner for the second out, but then walked Jason Jaso to load the bases.
Long's first pitch Rico got past catcher Danny Kahr to bring home Cuevas with the Renegades first run on the wild pitch. Rico then singled throught the rightside of the infield to score Jones and Jaso.
Vermont got two hits in the first inning and a one-out home run from Lorvin Louisa in the second inning, but would get just one more hit (a leadoff single in the fourth) over the final 7.2 innings of the game.
Antonio Perez (4-1) allowed one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings for the victory, while Robert Ellis struckout two in two hitless innings and Chad Orvella tossed a 1-2-3 ninth innings for his sixth save.
Long (0-4) allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and eighth strikeouts over five innings to take his fourth loss in as many starts. Reliever Eddie Diaz struckout three in two innings and Roberto Martinez two strikeouts in two innings as the three Vermont pitchers combined for just two walks and 13 strikeouts in the game.
Rico, Jones and Cuevas each had two hits for Hudson Valley (12-10), while Franklyn Jimenez was 0-for-3 with a walk to snap his eight-game hitting streak for Vermont (3-20).
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series at Centennial Field on Friday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. with Jeremy Plexico (1-1, 0.52 ERA) on the mound for the Expos. It is Key Bank Night at the ballpark and there is also a food drive at the ballpark with $1 off tickets for fans who bring a non-perishable food item to the game.
