Atlantic City Surf News Release

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (August 9, 2003) – Bryan Rekar tossed a complete game shutout and Tom Hage blasted a solo home run to lead the Long Island Ducks over the Atlantic City Surf, 2-0, Saturday evening at the Sandcastle.

The game was a classic pitchers dual between Atlantic City ace Anthony Chavez and Rekar. The two previously faced each other back on August 4 when they both tossed nine innings and allowed two runs apiece, in a game the Surf won 3-2 in extra innings.

Rekar (5-2) was the more dominant of the two in this particular matchup, tossing a complete game shutout while scattering five hits, striking out five and walking none.

Hage broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning with a solo homer that hit the foul pole in left field. The Ducks gained an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Kimera Bartee that plated Elvis Pena, who tripled.

Chavez (10-6), who came into the game with a league-leading 89 strikeouts, gave the Surf another solid effort despite the blemishes in the seventh and eighth innings. He allowed two run on six hits while striking out five and walking four.

Creighton Gubanich had two hits for the Surf while Bartee went 2-2 for the Ducks. Long Island improved to 20-9 in the second half while the Surf dropped to 16-13.

ON DECK: The Surf and the Ducks conclude their series with a 5:05 p.m., game on Sunday, August 10, at the Sandcastle. The first 500 women to sign up will participate in the "Diamond Dig", sponsored by Thomas Jewelers.
