Phoenix Rising FC News Release
Phoenix Rising FC has signed goalkeeper Ben Lundt on loan from FC Cincinnati, the club announced today. The loan agreement is pending league and federation approval. The MLS side has the right to recall Lundt, who is eleigible for selection immediately.
"Ben comes to us with an amazing pedigree," said Rising head coach Rick Schantz. "He understands what it takes to win in the USL. Ben is very confident and is an imposing figure in goal. I know he is excited about joining us. He will be a great addition to our goalkeeping family."
The reigning USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year, Lundt made 44 saves and led the league with nine clean sheets in 2020. The six-foot-six-inch German recorded 10 saves, including a penalty kick stop against St. Louis FC to send Louisville City FC to the Eastern Conference Final vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies.
FC Cincinnati first selected Lundt in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, before sending him on loan to Louisville each of the past two seasons.
"I learned Phoenix needed a goalkeeper three or four days ago," said Lundt. "The situation wasn't right for me in Cincinnati. Being in the league the last two seasons, I know Phoenix Rising. I have a lot of respect for this organization. When I learned they were interested in me it became an easy decision. was super happy to come here. My first session was good, just trying to get adjusted. The guys were nice and made me feel welcome."
Lundt made 12 USL Championship appearances and recorded four shutouts for Louisville City FC in 2019 after a historic career at the University of Akron. Lundt made 64 starts in three seasons for the Zips (2016-18). He won three straight MAC Championships and collected 27 clean sheets via 180 saves during his collegiate career. The 25-year-old was born in Berlin, Germany, where he played for Hertha BSC's U-17s and U-23s.
