THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF BEING SHUTOUT
One week after winning their opening day contest by twenty points over the Tampa Bay Vipers, the New York Guardians struggled mightily on offense against the DC Defenders.
The Guardians now have the distinction of being the first team in the XFL to be shutout, losing 27-0 to their divisional opponents. After the game, Head Coach Kevin Gilbride put the blame squarely on his shoulders.
"I'm disappointed in the way we played and told the team, that's on me. It's my responsibility to get them prepared and play better than we did and we didn't play as well as I thought we were capable of."
Guardians' Head Coach Kevin Gilbride
SLOW OFFENSE
The offense amassed a grand total of 137 net yards. They actually had more rushing yards (71) than passing yards once you count in the loss of yardage on sacks. Center Damien Mama, starting for the injured Ian Silberman, took some of the blame for the offensive struggles.
"We just couldn't get things going on offense. Probably take that on myself as the center. Trying to control the line of scrimmage."
Guardians' Center Damien Mama
DEFENSE STOOD TALL
After an opening touchdown drive by DC, the Guardians defense buckled down and as Gilbride put it, and "played inspired football". They gave up fewer yards in fewer plays than in week one. Even though it was in a losing effort, Gilbride was proud of their effort.
"It's not wasted because even though it was put forth in a losing effort on us as a team, it was quite an example of how to go about your business. So I shared that with them. I was proud of the effort that a lot of them put forth."
Guardians' Head Coach Kevin Gilbride
MOVING ON
The Guardians are back on the road this week in St. Louis for their week three matchup. After the shutout loss, the players were ready to get to work for next week.
"We try to look for positives. We've just got to come out next week and execute. We don't have a choice but to move on to the next game. If we stay on this game, it'll keep going downhill so we have to move on to the next game."
Guardians' Linebacker D'Juan Hines
"That was the mentality on the sideline before the game ended. Let's get back in the lab, get back to work. Let's find ourselves like we did last week. Bring that NY Guardians football that we played last week and apply it to next week."
Guardians Center Damien Mama
