New York Guardians News Release
Arlington, TX - The New York Guardians (3-2) played their best game of the season with a 30-12 victory over the Dallas Renegades (2-3). All three facets of the game showed up for New York on Saturday evening, starting with Quarterback Luis Perez throwing for 229 yards on 16 completions including an 80-yard touchdown to Colby Pearson. The balanced rushing attack combined for more than 100 yards for the 2nd straight game with a surprising 41 yards on five carries from Justin Stockton. Cavon Walker extended his league lead in sacks with one in each half while both Ryan Mueller and Toby Johnson earned interceptions. Matthew McCrane remained perfect on field goal tries with a three for three effort.
The low-scoring first half was dominated by each team's defense, including an impressive six tackles from Guardians middle linebacker, Ben Heeney as well as a sack from Cavon Walker, his fourth of the season.
The 2nd half opened with the Guardians' most impressive drive thus far of the 2020 season as they traveled 76 yards on 10 plays, ending with a touchdown run by Marquise Williams. The game took a turn from the low-scoring first half as three scores took place in the span of three plays. The first of these plays was an 80-yard touchdown pass to Colby Pearson down the right sideline which was promptly followed by the Guardians 2nd defensive touchdown of the year as Ryan Mueller batted a pass to himself and returned the interception for six. Toby Johnson also recorded an interception off of a Demetrious Cox deflection with 5:00 left in the 4th quarter, allowing the Guardians to take over and run the clock out.
The Guardians will return to MetLife Stadium on Saturday to host P.J. Walker and the undefeated Houston Roughnecks in a cross-divisional matchup while the Renegades will visit the D.C. Defenders.
