
Reed rejoins Tennessee; Mercedes sent to Daytona

KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Double-A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, have announced the addition of C Mark Reed to the team's active roster Tuesday. In a related roster move, C Mario Mercedes has been sent to the High-A Daytona Cubs. Both moves are immediate, with Reed being available for tonight's series opener with the Jacksonville Suns.
Reed joins the Smokies for the second time is 2010. On May 26, he was called up from Daytona and appeared in only two games. Reed hit .571 (4-for-7) batting average with one double and one RBI while with the Smokies. While with Daytona, he hit .245 (52-for-212) with seven doubles, two triples and two home runs. The La Verne, Calif. native was selected by the Cubs in the third round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Mercedes appeared in five games with the Smokies, after being called up from Low-A Peoria Chiefs on August 13. In 15 at-bats, he had a .200 (3-for-15) batting average with one RBI. Mercedes was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2003.
