Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Forward Willie Reed tied the all-time, single-game franchise record with 24 rebounds as the Springfield Armor (19-24), presented by MGM Springfield, edged the Erie BayHawks (13-31) Monday night inside the MassMutual Center by a final score of 112-103.
For the second time in as many games against the BayHawks, a member of the Armor's 2013-14 squad tied the all-time, single-game franchise record with 24 boards. Jeff Foote accomplished the feat last Friday night and was followed up by Reed's dominant performance Monday in the first of three straight home games to close out the 2013-14 home slate.
Erie guard Scott Suggs accounted for the first seven BayHawk points, but after the Armor fell behind 7-6, a 14-0 run opened up a 13-point advantage for Springfield that the home team would not relinquish, taking a 34-19 edge into the second.
After starting the game 5-of-17 from the field, Erie roared back by going 21-for-34 (62 percent) over the last 15 minutes of the half to trim the Armor lead to just two at 59-57 entering the locker room. Springfield dominated early in the paint, outscoring Erie 16-8 after one quarter, but the BayHawks battled back down low by out-muscling the Armor 24-18 under the basket in the second stanza.
Foote led all scorers with 17 points at the break, while Reed missed a first-half double-double by one board with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Suggs finished the half with 14 points as Erie's leader on offense, but it was Solomon Jones who orchestrated the rally with all 10 of his first-half points coming in the second frame.
Erie continued to chip away at the Armor's edge, pulling within six at the end of the third before tying the game at 91 in the final period. With just over six minutes to play and the game deadlocked, Khalif Wyatt took over down the stretch, scoring 10 points on a 3-of-4 effort from the field for a game-high 25 points. The Armor went on to outscore Erie 21-12 from the 6:13 mark when the BayHawks drew even, securing the 112-103 victory.
Suggs ended his evening with a team-high 20 points, while Jones finished with 18 and Cleveland Melvin added 14 off the bench. The BayHawks were held to a 31 percent clip from the floor in the second half and just one three-pointer.
Along with Wyatt's 25, Reed and Foote both dropped 20 and logged double-doubles as the seven-foot center from Cornell pulled down 10 boards alongside Reed's record-tying night.
The Armor will continue their final homestand and Fan Appreciation Week Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. against the BayHawks. For more information on the Armor, visit www.ArmorHoops.com or call (413) 746-3263. Keep up with the Armor on Facebook and Twitter !
