Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers came back from a 4-run deficit only to lose 8-6 to the Sarasota Reds Sunday night at Holman Stadium. Juan Apodaca drove in three runs and Drew Locke tallied three hits for the Dodgers. Vero next travels to Ft. Myers for a 7:05 PM game Monday night.

Sarasota built a 5-1 lead against starter Alberto Bastardo. Trevor Lawhorn delivered an RBI single in the first inning. Philip Gentry and Cody Strait drove in runs in the second. Hector Tiburcio led off the fourth with a homer as part of a 3-4 night. Jay Garthwaite homered in the sixth.

Eloy Gutierrez smacked a two-out single in the fifth to score Vero's first run. Cory Dunlap then sparked a sixth inning rally with a one-out single. Locke followed with a base hit and Xavier Paul singled in Dunlap. One out later Apodaca doubled in two runs and he eventually scored when Jamie Hoffmann reached an error to tie it at five.

The Reds immediately regained the lead, however. Marland Williams reached on an error, went to second on a walk to Garthwaite and then stole third. Chris Kroski singled to right for the go-ahead run. J.D. Roberts would add a homer in the eighth and Garthwaite went deep for a second time in the ninth.

Vero's last run came in the eighth. Xavier Paul walked and Russ Mitchell singled. Both advanced on a wild pitch from reliever and eventual winner Abe Woody (5-4). A ground out to third by Apodaca scored Paul. The Dodgers left runners stranded at first and third when it was still a one-run game.
