Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
VIERA, FL (August 6, 2006) - With all the trouble the Fort Myers Miracle have had on the road this season and less than a month to go in the season, the Miracle used their trip to Space Coast Stadium to start gaining confidence as they took the final three games of their four game series with the Brevard County Manatess in a 6-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The offense which pounded out 46 hits in the first three games, managed nine on Sunday. They extended their streak of base hits to 19 consecutive innings in the first when, with runners at first and second and two outs, Deacon Burns singled to center which scored Trevor Plouffe to make it 1-0. Steve Tolleson followed with an RBI single to left-center that made it 2-0. The consecutive streak came to an end in the second inning, but it didn't deter the Miracle the rest of the game.
With the Miracle leading 2-1 in the fourth Tolleson led off with a triple to left and scored on a sac fly by Luke Hughes.
The Manatees made it 3-2 in the fifth when Ned Yost led off with a single and, two batters later, scored on an RBI double by Ryan Crew. Miracle starter Anthony Swarzak, however, didn't allow much more going 7.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three in receiving his seventh win of the season.
The Miracle, who improved to 23-18 in the second half and a season tying high 11 games over .500 on the season, put it away in the seventh with the help of two Manatee errors. Korey Feiner led off with a walk and Erold Andrus followed with a single. Justin Arneson laid down a sac bunt, but the throw by pitcher Joe Thatcher to third sailed wide and it allowed Feiner to score and put runners at second and third. After a ground out and an intentional walk loaded the bases, Brock Peterson grounded into a fielders choice which scored Andrus. The throw to try and double up Peterson at first went by the first baseman and it allowed Arneson to score to make it 6-2.
The Miracle needed to hang on in the ninth when Tim Lahey gave up a lead off single to Brendan Katin, walked Hernan Iribarren and loaded them up with a single by Adam Heether. Charlie Fermaint followed with an RBI single and that was the end for Lahey. Danny Powers finished it off by striking out Yost, getting Freddy Parejo to hit into a fielders choice, which scored a run, and then struck out Ryan Crew to end the game.
The Miracle now return home for a six game homestand and begin it with a four game series against the Vero Beach Dodgers on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Josh Hill (6-3, 5.11) to the mound. It is Potts' Sports Café Miracle Monday presented by WJPT 106.3. It is also "Got it at a Thrift Night" where fans will have a chance to win wonderful prizes from a thrift shop. The game can also be heard live on Sports Radio 770 ESPN.
