Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

The RedHawks took down the JackHammers 10-7 in front of 4,218 fans at Newman Outdoor Field to improve to 39-23 while the JackHammers fell to 31-30 with the loss. With their win streak now at 13 games, the RedHawks are inching closer to breaking the record for the longest Northern League winning streak they currently hold at 14 which took place back in 2005.

Ruben Salazar extended his hitting streak to 17 games with his two run homer over the right field wall in the first that put the RedHawks ahead early. Wally Backman Jr. responded for his JackHammers with a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Cory Harris and put the score at 2-1.

Joliet would allow one run in the second before digging themselves a hole in the third as the RedHawks scored four runs on four hits off Carlos Castillo. Boomer Berry kicked it off by scoring Alan Rick on a single to right center. Zach Penprase followed with a three-run shot over the right field wall that put the RedHawks up 7-1. Joliet chipped away at their deficit in the sixth with Doc Brooks knocking a two run homer off Todd George. They notched two more off George to bring them within two.

Berry hit another RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to put the RedHawks up 8-5. Steve Mortimer and Berry stole second and third before Joe Mathis drove them in with a single to center field giving the RedHawks a five run lead going into the eighth inning. The JackHammers attempted to rally in the top of the ninth scoring two runs off David Morgan, but Nate Cotton saved the day once again. Cotton tallied his 17th save of the season and is one save away from tying Chris Chavez for the Northern League career saves record at 68.

Game two will be Saturday at 6 p.m. in Fargo with Billy Weitzman (3-1, 3.98) getting the call for the RedHawks and Dustin Taylor (2-2, 7.71) starting for the JackHammers.
