Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

The RedHawks improved to 23-22 with their 8-3 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats who currently hold possession of first place in the Northern League. The RailCats fell to 25-20 on the season.

Steve Haake got the RailCats on the board right away in the first by crushing a double out to the right field warning track to send Jay Pecci home. Carlo Cota answered in the bottom of the inning when he knocked one over the left field wall, his first of the season.

In the third, Mike Reese nailed a triple to center field and scored on a fielding error by center fielder Boomer Berry. Eric McNamee then scored off a Haake single up the middle putting Gary up 3-1. Kole Zimmerman made his way around the bases in the bottom of the third and scored when Berry singled up the middle bringing the RedHawks within one.

The RedHawks regained the lead in the fourth after Jeff Eure hit a two-run homer. Ruben Salazar ripped one through the left side as Berry sped home from second giving the RedHawks a 5-3 lead. Due to controversy between Gary management and the umpires, Gary played the rest of the game in protest starting in the bottom of the fifth. The controversy continued into the sixth inning over a call at third that lead to the ejection of Gary shortstop Jay Pecci as well as manager Greg Tagert.

Salazar connected again in the seventh, but this time sent it out to the left field warning track to bring in Zach Penprase and Cota. The RedHawks kept chipping away in the eighth when Berry came up with an RBI single to make the final 8-3.

Game two of the three-game weekend series will be Saturday at 6 p.m. in Fargo. Pitching for the RedHawks is Garry Bakker (1-2, 2.08) while Billy Phillips (2-4, 5.55) gets the call for the RailCats.
