
Redhawks Sweep Joliet with 10-5 Win Thursday

FARGO, ND- The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (31-26) scored two runs in the 2nd inning to catapult their way to a 10-5 win over the Joliet JackHammers (23-38) before 4,605 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Thursday afternoon.
The JackHammers pushed across a run in the 1st inning against Fargo-Moorhead starter LHP Scott Fogelson (3-2). C Phil Avlas (0-1) led off the game by popping out to first base. CF Adam Klein (1-4) worked a one-out walk and scored on a double by SS Kevin Rios (2-5), who extended his hitting streak to 22 games, and gave the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.
The RedHawks scored the tying run in the 1st inning against JackHammers RHP Derek Barrows (2-1). RF Mike Coles (2-5) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a walk issued to SS Zach Penprase (1-3). 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn (0-3) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. 1B Randall Simon (1-4) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Coles for a 1-1 tie.
Fargo-Moorhead sent 11 men to the plate in the 2nd inning to take the commanding lead. The first seven batters reached base against JackHammers Barrows. DH Alan Rick (3-3) drove in the first two runs after LF Justin Justice (1-4) led off the inning with a walk and 2B Carlo Cota (0-2) singled with a double down the right field line.
Barrows left the game halfway through the 2nd inning. He allowed eight runs on six hits in just an inning and a third on the mound.
After the dust settled, the JackHammers trailed 8-1 but Joliet's offense went back to work in the 3rd inning. Rios led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch. A single by 1B Freddie Thon (1-5) scored Rios for the 8-2 score.
Fargo-Moorhead got that run back when an RBI single by CF Nic Jackson (1-4) scored Rick from third base in the 3rd inning to make it 9-2.
A 5th inning solo home run by Rick gave the RedHawks a 10-2 advantage. He finished with three RBI on Thursday.
Joliet got within seven runs in the 5th inning. LF Brad Correll (1-3) singled and moved to second base on a walk issued to DH Kyle Nichols (1-4). Thon popped out and RF Tim Alberts (2-4) struck out. C Wally Backman, Jr. (2-5) singled home Correll to make it 10-3 Fargo-Moorhead.
The JackHammers inched two runs closer in the 8th inning. 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-3) hit a one-out triple and scored on an RBI single by CF Adam Klein (1-4). Following a fly out to center field by Rios, Correll worked a walk. A single by Nichols brought the JackHammers as close as 10-5.
The JackHammers start a three-game weekend series with the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The T-Bones will send LHP Ryan Knippschild (3-2, 3.03) to the mound while the JackHammers start RHP Nate Sevier (0-0, 1.50).
