Bolton, T-Bones Take Loss Despite Three-Hit Gem

WINNIPEG, Mb. - Dustin Bolton (3-3) extended his scoreless innings stretch to 22 with eight shutout frames, but a ninth-inning home run by Adam Frost snapped the streak and gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes (34-23) the sweep in their second walkoff win of a three-game set against the Kansas City T-Bones (26-33), 1-0, tonight at Canwest Park.
Bolton was stellar, holding Winnipeg to just two hits over the first eight innings while walking one and striking out four. Following a one-out single by Josh Asanovich in the first, Bolton retired 11 straight before Brent Metheny doubled to begin the fifth. After advancing to third on a flyout, Metheny was thrown out at home by second baseman Jeff Helps on a fielder's choice groundout by Cody Ehlers. Winnipeg would have just one more baserunner before Frost's home run in the ninth.
After retiring seven straight following a walk to Asanovich with two outs in the sixth, Bolton surrendered the decisive home run to Frost to lead off the ninth. The right-hander took the loss after allowing just the one run on three hits in eight-plus innings.
Andrew Cruse matched Bolton for seven innings before leaving in favor of Zach Baldwin in the eighth. Cruse allowed four hits and walked four while striking out eight in his outing. Baldwin retired the first five batters he faced before Aharon Eggleston singled with two outs in the ninth. Chris Homer (1-2) entered and induced a popout from Damian Rolls to end the inning.
Kansas City got a runner into scoring position in five of the first six innings, twice putting a runner at third with one out. The T-Bones left 11 men on base in the contest and two men on in four of their nine innings at the plate.
The loss was Kansas City's fourth straight. After outhitting Winnipeg 5-3 tonight, they have collected more hits than their opponent in each of those four losses.
The T-Bones travel to Joliet, Ill. tonight before beginning a three-game set tomorrow evening. Ryan Knippschild (3-2, 3.03) looks to snap Kansas City's skid in game one opposite Nate Sevier (0-0, 1.50) and the JackHammers. First pitch is set for 7:05.
