Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Salt Lake City, Utah - After Salt Lake Bees (61-58) could not hold onto a three-run lead the in the ninth, the Bees ended up winning 8-7 in 10 innings over the Oklahoma City RedHawks (63-55) before 9,068 at Spring Mobile Ballpark Wednesday night.
With the win, the Bees swept the RedHawks for the first time since 2000. The RedHawks have now lost six straight and dropped seven of eight on the road trip.
The Bees had runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the 10th. Trevor Crowe sent a ground ball to first baseman, and Mike Hessman threw home. The RedHawks had Ed Lucas in a rundown between home and third, but catcher Chris Wallace committed a throwing error to allow Lucas to get back to third safely.
Andrew Romine stepped up next and singled home the winning run off Jose Valdez (0-5) to give the Bees their second extra-inning win in three nights.
Down 7-4 in the ninth, the RedHawks loaded the bases after two hit batsmen and a walk. J.B. Shuck sent a sac fly to center field to pull the RedHawks within two.
After Jimmy Paredes struck out, Landon Powell sent a 3-2 pitch down the first-base line for a game-tying, two-run double.
Although Salt Lake controlled most of the game, the RedHawks got on the board first, plating a run in with two outs in the second. Fernando Martinez doubled to the left-center field gap, and Matt Dominguez followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0.
Salt Lake led off each of the first two innings with an extra-base hit, but could not score either time. The Bees would take advantage of a one-out triple by Doug Deeds in the third, as Crowe sent a sac fly to left field to tie the game.
A Hank Conger RBI single gave the Bees their first lead in the fourth. Matt Long also drove home a run with two away to make it 3-1.
The RedHawks loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. A run scored after Shuck reached on a fielder's choice, but that's all they would get.
Salt Lake got the run right back in the bottom of the inning when Deeds led off with a home run. Kole Calhoun later collected an RBI single to give the Bees a 5-2 lead.
Down on a rehab assignment from the Astros, Jason Castro homered to start the sixth to make it a two-run game.
Just like the previous inning, Salt Lake scored right away in response, plus another. Long and Deeds started the inning with back-to-back triples, and Crowe hit another sac fly to make it 7-3.
Shuck drove in his second run of the night with a two-out double in the seventh to cut the Bees lead down to three.
Matt Dominguez went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs. He reached base five times. Shuck tied a season high with three RBIs.
Salt Lake finished with 16 hits, including eight for extra bases. They totaled four triples, three doubles, and one home run.
Bees reliever Ryan Brasier (6-1) earned the win after pitching 1.1 scoreless innings. He stranded the go-ahead run in scoring position in both the ninth and 10th.
