Oklahoma RedHawks groundskeeper Monte McCoy has again been judged as the best in his profession according to a vote of the 16 field mangers of the Pacific Coast League.
McCoy, 34, was chosen as the 2003 Sports Turf Manager of the Year, in recognition of his work in keeping the field at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in exemplary condition throughout another scorching summer in Oklahoma City. McCoy had previously won the award in 2000 and finished second in 2002.
The labor of the head groundskeeper and his crew is vital to the operations of every team as he must make sure the field remains safe and in top-notch condition throughout the rigorous use by a professional baseball squad. The STM award is based on 11 criteria including, overall playing surface, outfield/infield turf, pitcher's mound condition as well as professionalism of the grounds crew.
McCoy, a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, has been with the RedHawks for all six seasons at SBC Bricktown Ballpark. His first year in professional baseball was in 1997 when he worked with the Oklahoma City 89'ers at All Sports Stadium after previously working at OU.
The Pacific Coast League will also award "President's Honorable Mention Awards" to runners-up Jarad Alley of Albuquerque and Sacramento's Matt LaRose. Alley installed and nurtured a spectacular brand-new field at Isotopes Park, while LaRose, last year's winner, kept Raley Field in pristine shape through year.

2002: Matt LaRose- Sacramento
