Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish looked to snap a 3-game skid as they took on the South Georgia Peanuts in the second game of the 3 game series. Acting Manager Denny Gomez sent Justin Ottman (1-1) to the hill and Wally Backman, the Peanuts' skipper, countered with Dumas Garcia (4-1). The Redfish, for the second night, kept the game close despite the bats not working early as the Peanuts edged Charlotte County, 5-3.
Ottman came out firing against the Peanuts, but the Peanuts reached him four batters into the game. With one out, Joey Hooft chopped a single to right and stole second. After Ottman got the second out of the inning, Doc Brooks ripped a double that kicked off the third base bag and Hooft came around to give the Peanuts an early lead, 1-0. The Redfish tried to respond against Garcia in the bottom of the 1st but, after Jose Gutierrez reached on single, Garcia set down Ramon Downing and Josh Murray on strikeouts.
The Peanuts plated 3 more runs in the top of the 3rd inning, only 2 of which were earned, as the Redfish couldn't turn a double play. Ottman went on to pitch a 1-2-3 4th inning and forced the Peanuts to ground into an inning ending double play to end the 5th. He finished the night with 3 ER on 7 hits in 5.0 innings of work. He also added 3 Ks and didn't surrender a walk. Reynaldo Correal was exceptional out of the bullpen. After a 1-2-3 6th, Correal had to exit the game earlier than he would have liked as he got his hand stepped on during a close play as Peanuts' shortstop, Johnny Washington, grounded out to first. Brandon Camardese didn't disappoint in relief. Camardese didn't allow a Peanut to reach base in his 0.2 innings.
Just like last night, the Charlotte County bats came to life late to make it a ballgame. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Downing earned a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. William Plaza, who finished the night 2-for-5, hit one of his two doubles on the night and picked up an RBI and the Redfish were on the scoreboard. PJ Lehmann, who homered last night, swatted a RBI single to right and the Redfish moved within 2 runs at 4-2.
The Peanuts came back with a run in the top of the 8th to push the score to 5-2, but the Redfish again answered with a run of their own. Plaza hit his second double and came around to score as Eric Quarberg, playing in only his second game as a Redfish, got his first RBI and the Redfish closed the gap to 5-3. Aristedes Almenar pitched another stellar inning out of the bullpen as he got his 20th K and the Redfish came up to the plate with a chance to tie or win it in the bottom of the 9th. Gutierrez reached on a single and finished the night 3-for-6 with 3 singles. Downing moved him to second on fielder's choice but Ja Jones wouldn't give the Redfish another shot as he struck out the next two batters to end the game.
The Redfish will look to take one from the Peanuts tomorrow night, June 23rd. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. The Redfish have an off day on Sunday as they prepare to welcome the Bradenton Juice for another installment of the Sunshine State Rivalry Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing, on Monday, June 25th.
