Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were denied their seventh straight win in a 6-3 loss to the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday night. The Chiefs carried a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning, before Rochester rallied against a normally impenetrable Syracuse bullpen. The Red Wings scored three eighth-inning runs to break a 3-3 tie.
Some small ball put Syracuse (66-72) on the board for two runs in the third inning. Carlos Maldonado and Chris Curran began the frame with back-to-back singles against Red Wings starter Andy Baldwin. After a Steve Lombardozzi sacrifice bunt, Seth Bynum grounded out to first to drive in a run. Tug Hulett then hit a ground ball deep in the shortstop hole and beat out the throw from Matt Tolbert, scoring Curran on the infield single to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.
Syracuse switched from small ball to long ball in the fourth inning. Jeff Frazier blasted Baldwin's first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for a solo home run, giving the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. The home run was Frazier's tenth of the season.
Baldwin would settle down after the home run, allowing just three runs in total in his eight innings. At one point, Baldwin threw 24 consecutive strikes in between the second and fourth innings. But Chiefs starter J.D. Martin was just as good, with six and one-third innings of one-run ball. Martin allowed just four hits and one walk, striking out five.
Rochester (53-89) finally plated a run against Martin in the seventh. Jeff Bailey led off the inning with a home run to deep left-center field, and Martin was removed one batter later after a strikeout of Dustin Martin. Left-hander Atahualpa Severino then entered, and Rochester came right back. Chase Lambin greeted Severino with a single, and after a strikeout of Brian Dinkelman, Aaron Bates singled and Jair Fernandez walked. With the bases full, left-handed hitter Brandon Roberts slashed a two-run single to center field, tying the game at 3.
The Red Wings then took over the lead against Garrett Mock in the eighth inning. Ray Chang led off with a single, but stayed put after two quick outs. Lambin then worked a walk to bring up Dinkelman, who crushed a two-run double into the right-center field gap, putting Rochester up 5-3. Bates followed with an RBI double to give the Wings their final three-run advantage.
The Chiefs play their penultimate game of the season on Sunday night at 6:00. Syracuse returns home to face Lehigh Valley in the first of a two-game series, with right-handers Ryan Tatusko for Syracuse and Scott Mathieson for Lehigh Valley set to start.
