MORE PLAYER NEWS The Red Wings 2004 season is more than two months gone by, but---as usual---a number of 2004 Wings players have been in action this fall. The Arizona Fall League's regular season concluded Thursday and six former Red Wings played for Grand Canyon. A lot of Twins fans have their eyes on Jason Bartlett especially now that Christian Guzman has signed a four year deal with Washington. Bartlett hit well in Phoenix batting .397 over 17 games with four doubles, two triples and six steals. He could go into Spring Training as the favorite to start at shortstop for the Twins unless Minnesota signs a free agent.

Outfielder Kevin West, who figures to start in the Wings outfield in 2005, replaced Jason Kubel in Arizona after Kubel suffered a devastating knee injury in his first Fall League game. West picked up where he left off at the end of the International League season by hitting .340 with a homer and 13 RBIs in just 16 games. Meanwhile, Rob Bowen became just the second player in the history of the AFL to come back for his fourth season in the league. Bowen, who could be the Wings Opening Day catcher in '05, hit .250 for the Rafters with no homers and eight RBIs in 19 games.

Three Wings pitchers were in the desert. Reliever Jesse Crain was the most impressive appearing in 11 games and going 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Two talented right-handers who could be in the Wings rotation to start next season both pitched for Grand Canyon. Scott Baker was 0-1 with a solid 3.68 ERA in seven starts. J.D. Durbin started six games and was 1-1 with a 4.56 ERA and made news when he reportedly hit 100 mph on the radar gun with his fastball. Durbin is from Scottsdale so he was playing in his back yard. He had plenty of company at his home during the AFL with Bartlett, West, Baker and Baker's wife all bunking at his place.

Some 2004 Wings are playing south of the border. In the Venezuelan Winter League, the Twins always have a number of players on the Aragua entry, and this year is no exception. RHP Willie Eyre has been one of the most impressive pitchers in the circuit so far. While pitching in 11 games and making four starts, Eyre has gone 4-1 with a fantastic 1.07 ERA. Terry Tiffee has joined Aragua and has played 10 games while hitting .293 with a pair of home runs. Venezuelan native Luis Rodriguez, who was recently added to the Twins' 40 man roster, has typically struggled in the winter league, and this year has been no exception. Rodriguez is hitting just .219 over 27 games for Aragua.

Reliever Beau Kemp is pitching for La Guaira in Venezuela and is 1-0 with a 3.94 ERA after 15 appearances.

In the States, teams are starting to sign Minor League free agents. Word of those signings is starting to trickle in. Former Wings second baseman Jesse Garcia has signed with San Diego, and former outfielder Chad Green (who did not play at all last year) has signed with Florida. Additionally, outfielder Karim Garcia has signed a deal with Orix in the Japanese Pacific League.
