Chicago Stars FC News Release
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Chicago Red Stars fell 1-0 to the Boston Breakers on Wednesday night before a crowd of 4,075 at Harvard Stadium. The loss puts a halt to Chicago's two-game winning streak.
The Red Stars started strongly and had the better of play in the first ten minutes. However, a hard foul on Lindsay Tarpley sidelined the Red Stars captain for several minutes and tilted momentum for the remainder of the first half to the Breakers.
Boston controlled play for the twenty five minutes following Tarpley injury, firing shots on Red Stars keeper Caroline Jönsson and earning multiple corner kicks.
In the 35th minute, the Breakers sustained pressure finally resulted in a goal. Kristine Lilly drove a dipping ball just beyond the Red Stars back line, where Angela Hucles burst through, catching the pass on her boot and volleying it past a helpless Jönsson.
The half ended with the score 1-0 in favor of Boston.
The second half, completely dominated by Chicago, was played almost entirely in the Breakers' side of the field.
Megan Rapinoe and Marian Dalmy made repeated forays down the flanks and send dangerous crosses across the Boston goal mouth. However, Breakers goalkeeper Alison Lipsher was equal to the challenge.
The Red Stars outshot the Breakers 13-2 in the second stanza, including a post-rattling bomb from Rapinoe that shifted the goal two feet off the end line.
The best opportunity for the Red Stars to equalize came in the 84th minute, when second half sub Danesha Adams whipped in a wicked ball that found an unmarked Ella Masar streaking toward the goal. Masar snapped a header but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
The Red Stars continue their East Coast road swing on Sunday when they visit Sky Blue FC, a match which will be nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel at 3:30 pm CT.
The Red Stars return home to TOYOTA Park to face Abby Wambach and the Washington Freedom at 3 pm Sunday, July 26th. The Red Stars will be donning special green jerseys, which they will be auctioning off to help raise awareness of perils that face the planet. Chicago musical group Hello Dave will be performing a pre-game concert, beginning at 2 pm. For more information, log on to www.chicagoredstars.com or call 866 WPS 2009.
