Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS. -- Center fielder Freddy Guzman went 3-for-5 and keyed two PawSox scoring rallies, while the bullpen tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to lift the Pawtucket Red Sox past the Indianapolis Indians 4-2 on Monday night at Victory Field.
With the loss the Indians fall to 23-27 overall and 11-14 at home, while the win improves the Red Sox to 27-23 on the season and 15-14 on the road. The victory is the second in-a-row for Pawtucket and gives them a 2-2 series split against Indianapolis.
The Pawtucket offense was able to push four runs across on 10 hits and benefited from two Tribe errors that led to two unearned runs.
Guzman started the scoring for the Red Sox in the second inning, when he lifted a two-out single to center to plate 3B Travis Denker, who reached on a double earlier in the frame. The speedy outfielder then started the Red Sox fifth inning rally, when he led off the frame with a base hit, moved to third on a single by RF Sean Danielson, and came plateward on a groundout by C Dusty Brown.
Then after the Tribe evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a double by RF Garrett Jones and a single by 3B Neil Walker, the PawSox re-took the lead for good by plating two runs in the seventh without recording a hit. In that frame the Red Sox collected their runs by way of two base-on-balls, a Tribe throwing error, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.
The Red Sox bullpen was dominant for the second straight game as relievers Billy Traber (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) and Fernando Cabrera (1.0 IP, 1 SO) combined to allow just one hit in 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Traber was credited with the win to improve to 3-3 on the season, while Cabrera tossed a scoreless ninth to collect his 10th save of the season.
Indians reliever Jason Davis (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO) walked four in 2.2 innings and was hindered by a key Tribe error as he suffered the loss to drop to 0-6 on the season , while fellow reliever Chris Bootcheck 9(1.0 IP, 1 SO) continued to dominate out of the pen for Indianapolis, tossing a scoreless frame for the third consecutive outing.
Both starting pitchers were able to work their out of several tight spots, but neither figured in the decision as 2008 International League Pitcher of the Year, Charlie Zink (5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO) allowed two runs in 5.2 innings and Indians' starter Ty Taubenheim (5.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) allowed just one earned run in 5.1 innings.
Indians outfielder Andrew McCutchen remained red hot for the Tribe as he reached base in all four at-bats, going 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. The Indianapolis top prospect also continued to excel in the field as he collected two outfield assists and made a spectacular catch in which he ran down a ball hit deep in the gap in right-center field.
McCutchen (3-for-3, 1 R) was also the only Indians' batter to collect multiple hits, while Guzman (3-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI), Denker (2-for-4, 1 R) and DH Chris Carter (2-for-4, 1 R) each turned in multi-hit performances for the Red Sox.
Indianapolis continues their homestand as they begin a four-game series with Lehigh Valley (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Jeremy Powell is scheduled to start for the Indians, while LHP Gustavo Chacin is expected to get the nod for the IronPigs.
