Saginaw Spirit News Release
(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit celebrated a 3-0 shutout victory over the Kitchener Rangers in front of a record setting 6,004 fans Saturday night. Goalie Edward Pasquale earned the games first star with the shutout, stopping 38 shots. Jordan Skellett set a new team record with his sixty-first assist of the season, the most ever scored by a Spirit player in a single season.
The win moves Saginaw's record to 33-27-4-3 with 73 points. The team is sitting in seventh place in the OHL Western Conference, with the Guelph Storm in sixth with 74 points and the Erie Otters in eighth with 73 points. Both the Storm and Otters have wrapped up their regular season stints, and the Spirit are set to play their last regular season game Sunday in Plymouth. A Spirit victory against the Whalers will see the Spirit take on the third ranked Kitchener Rangers in the first round, an overtime or shootout loss will pit the Spirit against the second place London Knights and a regulation loss will push the Spirit to the eighth seed with a first round match-up against the top ranked Windsor Spitfires. Regardless of opponent, the Spirit will host their first home game of the post season on Saturday, March 20.
Saturday night saw a lot of excitement in the building, with Spirit winger Anthony Camara starting scoring with an unassisted goal at 14:55 in the first. The second period saw Saginaw extend their lead to 2-0, this time courtesy a goal from center Ivan Telegin from winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL Phoenix Coyotes) and center Jordan Skellett. The Rangers continued to push, but were unable to score on Spirit netminder Edward Pasquale (NHL Atlanta Thrashers). In the final minute Kitchener pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Spirit center Michael Sgarbossa cleared the puck and tallied an empty net goal to secure the 3-0 victory for Saginaw.
Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale posted 38 saves on 38 shots for the shutout, his first with the Spirit. He recorded a shutout while playing with the Belleville Bulls against the Peterborough Petes on October 13, 2007. Ranger netminder Mike Morrison tallied 29 saves with 32 shots.
