Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah - Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel announced on Monday that the club has signed GK Alex Horwath, pending receipt of his ITC, to round out the contingent of goalkeepers ahead of the 2018 season. Horwath joined RSL for training on Sunday at Zions Bank Training Center before the club departs for Orlando, Florida, for the third and final leg of preseason training.
"We are happy to bring Alex into our locker room. He's another player that will help raise our level of training and keep a competitive environment," Waibel said. "He has proven that he can compete in the U.S. and abroad and with his experience in Europe we feel like he brings a new element to our roster."
Horwath, 30, has played the last three seasons for SK Brann in Norway, where he helped the club earn promotion to the first division after the 2015 season. Prior to that, he played one season with Ljungskile SK in Sweden, posting 14 shutouts and a 0.83 goals against average in 30 starts during the 2014 season.
A product of the University of Wisconsin, Horwath signed with Major League Soccer as a pool goalkeeper for the 2010 season before landing with the New York Red Bulls in 2011. In his only MLS appearance on March 26, 2011, he made four saves in posting a shutout in a scoreless draw against the Columbus Crew. He played 2012 with the Wilmington Hammerheads and 2013 with VSI Tampa Bay FC before moving abroad in 2014. In his professional career, he has 37 shutouts in 106 appearances across all competitions.
