Real Salt Lake Releases Protected Player List in Advance of Expansion Draft

SANDY, Utah (Monday, November 21, 2011) - In conjunction with Major League Soccer, Real Salt Lake has announced the 11 players on the Utah side's Protected Player list in advance of the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft, taking place this Wednesday, November 23. MLSsoccer.com will broadcast live streaming video of the announcement of the Montreal Impact's 10-player list on Wednesday afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m. MT.

The following 11 RSL players will not be eligible for selection by the Impact when Major League Soccer's 19th side makes its selections in two days' time:

GK Nick Rimando

DF Tony Beltran

DF Nat Borchers

DF Jamison Olave

DF Chris Schuler

DF Chris Wingert

MF Kyle Beckerman

MF Will Johnson

MF Javier Morales

FW Fabian Espíndola

FW Álvaro Saborío

In addition to those 11 players, MF Luis Gil is automatically protected as a continuing member of the Generation adidas player development program, while FW Donny Toia and 2012 contributor MF Nico Muñiz are both protected thanks to their Homegrown Player status.

With the Protected Player list established, this means that the following players currently under contract with Real Salt Lake will be available for selection by Montreal:

Goalkeepers: Tim Melia, Kyle Reynish

Defenders: Rauwshan McKenzie, Robbie Russell, Blake Wagner

Midfielders: Jean Alexandre, Arturo Alvarez, Yordany Alvarez, Nelson González, Ned Grabavoy, Collen Warner, Andy Williams

Forwards: Chris Agorsor, Cody Arnoux, Paulo Jr.

Real Salt Lake History in MLS Expansion Drafts

2006: Toronto FC - Jason Kreis selected (re-acquired by RSL in exchange for allocation money)

2007: San Jose Earthquakes - no RSL player selected

2008: Seattle Sounders FC - Nate Sturgis selected

2009: Philadelphia - no RSL player selected (RSL traded Chris Seitz to Union in exchange for allocation money on eve of expansion draft)

2010: Portland / Vancouver - Portland selected Robbie Findley and David Horst
