Real Salt Lake News Release
NEW YORK - Real Salt Lake (2-2-1, 7 points) fell behind early and couldn't mount a comeback, losing to New York City FC for the first time in four meetings between the two clubs by a 4-0 tally on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.
RSL had the first opportunity of the match when FW Luis Silva was on the doorstep, but his close-range shot was blocked by NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson. The home side capitalized on an early opportunity when a clearance was stopped at the edge of the box and Ismael Tajouri scored his fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute. New York City doubled its lead from the penalty spot in the 30th minute through Maxi Moralez, then in the 41st minute Jo Inge Berget got in behind the defense to make it 3-0 before the halftime whistle.
The second half saw the game open up for both sides, but New York City still held a 15-7 shots advantage in the half. The fourth goal came through a great sequence that finished with Ebenezer Ofori scoring his first goal of the season and though RSL had some chances, Johnson finished the match with four saves to earn the shutout.
MF Pablo Ruiz made his RSL debut, providing a second-half spark, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 3-0 first-half deficit as NYCFC raced to its fifth win in six matches this season, remaining unbeaten and atop the Eastern Conference.
UP NEXT: Real Salt Lake returns home and opens the 2018 Rocky Mountain Cup against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, April 21 (7 p.m. MT).
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:
NYC: Ismael Tajouri, 12th minute - Kyle Beckerman attempted to clear a ball into the box from the right side, but it only got as far as Ismael Tajouri at the edge of the 18. From there, he lifted a shot inside the far post for his fourth goal of the season.
NYC: Maxi Moralez (PK), 30th minute - After Justen Glad was whistled for a foul on the edge of the 18, referee Mark Geiger awarded a penalty. Maxi Moralez hit a high shot that found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season to make it 2-0.
NYC: Jo Inge Berget (Jesus Medina, Ronald Matarrita), 41st minute - Up the left side, Jesus Medina led Jo Inge Berget into space behind the RSL defense. With just Nick Rimando to beat, he calmly put his shot into the net for his first goal and a 3-0 NYCFC lead.
NYC: Ebenezer Ofori (Maxi Moralez, Jesus Medina), 70th minute - Jesus Medina rolled the ball out for Maxi Moralez up the left side of the box and he dropped a ball back from the endline to the oncoming Ebenezer Ofori for the first-time shot into the open net to make it 4-0.
KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS:
NYC: Sean Johnson, 4th minute - Albert Rusnák lifted a ball over the defense to find Luis Silva for a hard-hit volley at the far post and while he caught Johnson leaning to his right, the keeper was able to keep his feet outstretched to make the near-post save.
RSL: Nick Rimando, 54th minute - Jesus Medina got into the box on a ball from the left side, but Nick Rimando met the ball off his boot for the save and a putback attempt by Maxi Moralez missed over the bar.
NOTES:
MF Pablo Ruiz became the sixth player to make his RSL debut this season when he subbed on for Luis Silva in the 58th minute.
FW Joao Plata did not make the trip after experiencing hamstring tightness at training on Sunday and stayed in Utah as a precaution.
RSL had three players on loan with Real Monarchs in the USL. GK Connor Sparrow, MF Jose Hernandez and FW Ricky Lopez-Espin were on the travel roster as the Monarchs took on Seattle Sounders FC 2 in Tacoma, Washington, on Wednesday.
