Minnesota United FC News Release
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Minnesota United has reached an agreement with Club Universitario de Deportes for Peru international Alexi Gómez, who arrives to the Loons on loan for the 2018 season with an option to buy. Gómez will join the team pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC and will occupy an international slot on Minnesota's roster.
"We are delighted to bring a player of Alexi's quality to the club," said MNUFC Head Coach Adrian Heath. "He's a very dynamic player, he's an incredible server of the ball on set pieces and he's composed on the ball. He's versatile, he's a player who can play four different positions on the field. It's a no-brainer for us. I know he's excited to be here and we are all looking forward to getting to work with him."
Gómez, 25, spent three months on loan with Atlas FC during the 2018 Liga MX Clausura from Universitario. He is a versatile left-footed player who can feature in defense and throughout the midfield.
He began his career with CD León de Huánuco in his native country in 2012 before moving to Universitario in 2013. During his time with the latter, Gómez was called up to the Peru under-20 national team to participate in the 2013 South American Youth Football Championship in Argentina and featured at club level in the 2014 Copa Libertadores. Since then, he has played for Peru's senior side on five occasions, most recently in 2017.
Gómez left Peru in 2015 for Sweden, where he spent time with IF Brommapojkarna before returning to South America to participate in the Primera División and cup competition of Chile with CD San Luis de Quillota. He returned to Peru in 2016, once again donning the Universitario jersey, and scored 12 goals in 33 games during the 2017 season -- a personal record.
Minnesota United's next home match is on Saturday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. CT against Houston Dynamo. With just under 14,000 season ticket holders, the best way to guarantee your spot at Allianz Field is to become a season ticket holder today. Tickets available at MNUFC.COM or by calling 763.4SOCCER.
