Real Monarchs News Release
Sacramento, California (Sunday, May 31, 2015) - Real Monarchs remain undefeated against the defending USL champions after Saturday night's hard-fought 1-1 draw. GK Eric Osswald had seven saves on the night, including a penalty-kick stop against Utah native and Sacramento Republic captain Justin Braun, the former Skyline HS star.
In the sixth minute, FW Emery Welshman tracked back to knock the ball back for his side and sent it forward to MF Ricardo Velazco who was taken down in the box, earning the spot kick opportunity. FW Max Rauhofer converted the PK for his team-high fourth goal of the season, his second against Sacramento Republic FC (April 29 game-winner at Rio Tinto Stadium). Monarchs nearly doubled their lead in the 12th minute when again Welshman chipped a ball over the defense to his strike partner Rauhofer, whose shot to the back post fell just wide.
In the 18th minute Sacramento equalized with a goal from FW David Estrada. MF Ivan Mirkovic broke free of the defense and pulled three Monarchs players toward him, his cutback pass on the end line found an unmarked for the equalizer.
Republic FW Cameron Iwasa earned his side a penalty kick in the 35th minute, when MF Alec Sundly pulled him down in the box. Sacramento Captain Justin Braun failed to convert the penalty when the Monarchs' Osswald guessed the correct side to parry the ball away. Osswald's PK save was the first with Monarchs and the eventual game-saving stop to earn his side a difficult road point at a raucous Bonney Field.
The second half began with a flurry of cards shown to both teams. The match got extremely chippy in the 65th minute when MF Max Alvarez' free kick bounced around in the box and saw Vukovic and DF Emilio Orozco both getting stepped on.
The final 20 minutes of the match saw Republic out shoot Monarchs 8-1 and four yellow cards issued (three to Monarchs, one to Republic). The last yellow card issued was Orozco's second, as he was dismissed from the match in the 90th minute, causing the Monarchs to play the final five minutes of stoppage time down a man. Orozco will miss the USL club's next match on Wednesday, June 3rd against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Real Monarchs return to Salt Lake City to finish out its four-games-in-10-days stretch with that home match against Whitecaps FC 2 on Wednesday, June 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Real Monarchs fell to Whitecaps FC 2 back on May 24 in Canada, 2-1, with MF Lucas Baldin scoring the Monarchs only goal that day, converting a late PK.
