TOP NOTES OF THE WEEK
1. The Royals sustained the team's 30th regulation loss of the year in Johnstown on Friday night. This loss, which extended Reading's winless streak against the Chiefs to twelve games (0-10-2) dating back to February 1, 2008, marked the fourth time (in the eight year history of the team) that the Royals have lost 30 (or more) regular season games. The team record for losses in a single season is 36 (27-36-9), which was established in the Royals' inaugural season (2001-02).
2. Reading completed the team's season-long seven game road trip with a 4-1 win in Elmira on Saturday night. The Royals compiled a record of 2-3-2 during this phase of the season.
3. The Royals suffered the team's fifteenth regulation loss at home of the year on Sunday against the Trenton Devils (7-15-0). This ties the second most home losses in a single season for Reading: 17-15-4 (2006-07). The team record for regulation losses at home is 16, which was set in 2002-03: 17-16-3.
4. In Reading's loss to Johnstown last Friday, the team scored just two goals, marking the twentieth time this year that the team has been held to two goals or less (and the third time in the previous four games). The Royals have compiled a record of 0-18-2 in those games. Reading averages scoring 2.98 goals per game, which is eighteenth in the league.
5. The Royals held the Elmira Jackals to one goal in Saturday's win (4-1), marking the fourth time this season that Reading has held the opposition to one goal or less. The Royals have compiled a 3-1-0 record in those games.. The Royals have given up two goals or less thirteen times this year, and the team has gone 11-2-0 in those games. The Royals average giving up 3.82 goals per game, which is last in the league.
6 .Kirk MacDonald racked up a natural hattrick in Saturday's 4-1 win in Elmira, as he bagged the game's first three goals, which included his first âfirst goal' of the year and his second game winner of the season. That was MacDonald's first pro hattrick, and the second three goal performance of the season for the Royals. (Max Taylor scored all three goals in Reading's 3-2 win over the Elmira Jackals on December 12, 2008). MacDonald's hattrick marked the 18th time a Royal has scored three or more goals in a regular season game.
7. MacDonald is currently riding an eight game point streak (9g-6a=15pts) for the Royals. His four point performance on Saturday in Elmira (which is only the second four point game of the season for a Royal) was his twelfth multi-point game of the year. MacDonald, who scored the Royals' third goal in Sunday's 5-3 loss to Trenton, leads the Royals with 19 goals in forty-two games played. Two of his four goals this past week were scored while the Royals were on the power play, giving MacDonald a teamleading six power play goals on the year. MacDonald, who is the only player on the active roster for the Royals to score more than one game winning goal (2), is playing to a team leading plus-3 (+3)
8. Dan Rudisuela, who scored the Royals' second goal on Sunday, has scored 3 goals in his last 6 and is currently riding a 4 game point streak (2g-3a=5pts).
9. Tyler Doig registered his team leading thirteenth multi-point game of the year against the Chiefs last Friday (0g-2a). Brock Hooton, who is one of only two players on the Royals' active roster to be playing to a plus (+2)in his games with the team, racked up his eleventh multi-point game of the year on Saturday in Elmira (1g-1a). Doig and Hooton are tied for the team lead with 27 assists, while Hooton leads the team with 42 total points (15g-27a=42pts) in 44 games played.
10. Although the Royals' power play was held off the board on Friday in Johnstown (0-3), Reading's PP scored twice in Elmira on Saturday (2-10) and once against the Devils on Sunday (1-6). The Royals PP has been held off the board nineteen times this year; and has scored more than one PPG fifteen times. In the last 17 games, the Royals PP has gone 22 for 97 (22.7%) and the team has compiled a record of 7-8-2 in those games. Overall, the Royals are 48-276 on the PP (17.4%) (9th in the league).
11. The Royals allowed one power play goal to the Chiefs in Johnstown on Friday (1-3); held the Jackals' PP off the board on Saturday (0-5); and allowed three PPGA to Trenton on Sunday (3-6). Sunday's game marked the sixth time this season that Reading has allowed three PPGA in a single game (and the 16th time the team has given up more than one PPGA).
