RDA Girls Capture D.C.-Area Tourney Success

November 15, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release

The RDA 2006 Girls pose for a photo with the Miami Strikers, their final opponent of the weekend in Maryland.

The Veterans Day weekend saw the RDA's girls sides in action at tournaments in the D.C. area, as the Hounds' older teams took part in the Bethesda Premier Cup in Maryland and the younger squads were at the Nation's Capital Cup in Northern Virginia.

For the older teams, it was the first action of the new competitive year after players regrouped from their recently completed high school seasons. That meant there was some rust to shake off, but many of the teams started to hit their groove, as the 2006 Girls did with a pair of wins.

After a 1-0 loss to a penalty kick by A3 Soccer, the 06s bounced back with a 1-0 win over Great Falls/Reston (Va.) on a Stephanie Tovar goal and a 2-1 victory over the Miami Strikers with Tovar and Sophia DeJesus scoring for the Hounds. The side improved through the weekend but still needs to clean things up in front of the opponents' goal to put away games.

The RDA's older Regional League sides also had good weekends, with the 2004/05 RL side posting a pair of victories and the 2006 RL Girls recording the only perfect 3-0-0 weekend of the bunch.

For the 04/05s, Lola Abraham put up a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Maryland Rush, and Bella Vozar had the only goal in a 1-0 win over Springfield (Va.), but the Richmond Strikers got the better of the Hounds in the finale, 3-2.

The 06 RL side started with a 3-1 win over Va. Revolution with two goals by Kate Hillegas and a volley by Kali Booker from a corner kick. Next up was a one-sided 7-2 victory over Maryland Rush with four more for Hillegas and Booker, Angie McGrath and Emily Sinton all finding the net. The perfect weekend required a scrappy 2-0 win over Deptford (N.J.), as Hillegas and Sinton each had a goal and assist after a scoreless first half, and the Hounds closed out the clean sheet.

Also at Bethesda, the 2007 RL Girls also had a strong weekend with a 1-1-1 record. Reese Phillips had a pair of goals on the weekend for the Hounds, who showed their toughness by making it through the three matches playing without any substitutes.

The 2012 RDA Girls captured their third consecutive tournament title at the Nation's Capital Cup in McLean, Va.

At the Nation's Capital Cup, every team in action picked up at least two wins, but it was the 2012 Girls who brought home the trophy by defeating the Western New York Flash in the final, 2-0.

The defense of Bailey Watts, Madison Szmyd, Emerson Catchen and Natalie Corbin combined to lead the team to three clean sheets in their four matches as they adjusted to playing on a bigger field. Mia Salsi and Danika Brummett scored in the championship game, while Addison Carpenter finished the weekend with three goals for the Hounds.

The 2013 Girls also reached the final, where they were topped by the host club, McLean, but clinching their group title came with some drama. The Hounds and Great Falls/Reston finished with matching 2-0-1 records after a 2-2 draw, so it was straight to penalty kicks, where the Hounds advanced to the title game. The 2011 and 2014 sides, meanwhile, each finished second in their group at 2-1-0.

After the busy girls weekend, this weekend will be the boys' turn, as the Hounds' teams head to the second weekend at the same two events.
