Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The Corpus Christi IceRays kicked off the 2012-2013 season by traveling north to the annual NAHL Showcase in Blaine, MN. In the first game, the IceRays completed a comeback win in overtime 4-3. The next two games Corpus Christi dropped to Austin in a shootout and Jamestown 4-1. Another comeback was complete to round out the weekend with a 5-3 victory over Johnstown.

GAME #1 - 09-12-12: Corpus Christi 4-3 (OT) Soo - In the first game of the 15th year anniversary season in Corpus Christi, the IceRays were down 2-0 after two periods. Eric Rivard and Jayce Douskey were credited with the tallies. In period three, Corpus began the comeback. On the power-play, Ian McGilvrey scored to pull the IceRays within one. Then a Tommy Telesca goal, followed by Rudy Sulmonte's first of the year powered the IceRays to a 3-2 lead. After Soo scored to force overtime, Perry D'Arrisso wired a shot top shelf just 40 seconds into overtime for the 4-3 win.

GAME #2 - 09-13-12: Corpus Christi 2-3 (SO) Austin - After trailing 2-0 to Austin after one period, the IceRays searched for another comeback and it came. In the second frame, Chris Stovall rocketed a wrist shot past goaltender Nick Lehr at the 4:23 mark to split the lead in half. Trailing heading into the final period didn't last long. Just 24 seconds in, Brandon Smith scored his first of the season to tie the contest and force overtime. After no scoring in overtime, a shootout commenced. McGilvrey and Sulmonte each scored in the shootout however, Colton Kramer sealed the win in the fifth round for Austin.

Game #3 - 09-14-12: Corpus Christi 1-4 Jamestown - The only team from New York State took to the ice with Corpus Christi on day three of the Showcase. 6:56 into the game, ex-ray Payden Mielke fired a shot from the point that was deflected by teammate Jeff McFarland and into the net for the 1-0 advantage. After no scoring in the second period, Jamestown came out firing in the third. Just 6:07 in, Tyler Dunagan notched an unassisted goal for the 2-0 lead. Luc Gerdes then made it 3-0 at the 14:25 mark. Corpus Christi showed life on the powerplay as Ian McGilvrey scored his second goal of the Showcase assisted by Travis Maxwell and Perry D'Arrisso. An empty net goal provided the Ironmen with the 4-1 win.

Game #4 - 09-15-12: Corpus Christi 5-3 Johnstown - In the final battle of the 2012 NAHL Showcase, the IceRays faced an expansion team, the Johnstown Tomahawks. In a game that saw a combined 208 penalty minutes the IceRays prevailed 5-3 backed by a Rudy Sulmonte hat trick. Corpus Christi once again was down 2-0 after one period, however, Sulmonte scored three straight goals including two shorthanded strikes for a 3-2 lead.
