Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Tyler Bruneteau scored a first period goal and that was all Rio Grande Valley needed as goaltender Nick Schmit stopped all 30 shots he faced and the Killer Bees shutout the Corpus Christi IceRays 2-0 in front of 6,203 fans at American Bank Center on Friday night.
Despite being outshot 14-5 in the first period of play it was the Killer Bees who had the only goal in the first twenty minutes of action. After a missed offside call by the linesman, Ben Greiner brought the puck in on net and fired a shot that was denied initially by Ben Myers, however the rebound went to his left right to an awaiting Tyler Bruneteau who pounded home his 13th goal of the year with 5:54 left in the opening period of play. The assists were picked up by Greiner and Aleksi Luhtalampi and the Killer Bees led 1-0.
That goal held up as the game winner while Joe Llaurado connected on an empty net goal with just 1:08 left in the final period of play. Llaurado let a shot go from center ice that split the posts and gave Rio Grande Valley a 2-0 lead. The goal was unassisted.
Nick Schmit denied all 30 shots he faced from the IceRays while Ben Myers turned aside 17 of 18 from the Killer Bees.
The IceRays return home tomorrow night for the final game of the 2013-14 season as they host Rio Grande Valley at 7:05PM inside American Bank Center. Coverage begins at 6:50PM with the IceRays Pregame Show on sportjuice.com, TuneIn Radio, ustream.com, and fasthockey.com.
